Navy to Host American, Penn and VCU on Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. ? The Navy men?s track & field team will host the second of three-straight home meets this Saturday when it takes on American, Penn and VCU. The weight throw begins the meet at 11 a.m. at Ingram Field, following by the track and remaining field events inside Halsey Field House at 11:30 a.m.

Despite winning 10 of the 17 events last Saturday, the Midshipmen (0-1) dropped a 91-90 decision to Princeton in Halsey Field House. The host Mids claimed a one-point lead after winning the 4x400-meter relay, but finished second to the Tigers in the final and decisive 4x800-meter relay.

Navy junior middle distance runner Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) earned ECAC and Patriot League Track Athlete-of-the-Week honors by assisting in two event victories last weekend. Harris won the 800-meter run with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 1:53.5 and ran the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay that produced an IC4A time of 3:19.4, despite his shoe ripping in the early stages of his first lap.

Classmate Dante Marshall (Hermitage, Pa.) claimed victory in both the long and triple jumps against the Tigers. Marshall soared 46?10-3/4? (14.29 meters) in the triple jump after posting a distance of 22?9-3/4? (6.95 meters) in the long jump.

Junior thrower Darryl Hunter (Des Moines, Iowa) qualified for the IC4A Championship in the shot put with a first-place effort of 53?3-1/2? (16.24 meters).

For this Saturday?s meet, each of the three visiting teams will be competing for the first time in more than a month.

American last competed at the Navy Invitational on Dec. 1, where the Eagles distance runners posted solid efforts. Steve Hallinan earned Patriot League Track Athlete-of-the-Week honors after his first-place time of 8:22.21 in the 3,000-meter run. Brendan Fennell ran the anchor leg of the fastest distance medley relay and completed the 3,000-meter run in 8:29.86.

VCU also saw its last action in Annapolis more than a month ago. Davion Lambert had a tremendous opening to his season, as he won both the long and triple jump events. Lambert qualified for the IC4A Championship with a distance of 24?1-3/4? in the long jump and cleared 6?6? in the high jump.

Penn comes to the Academy after competing at the Princeton Invitational back on Dec. 8. Tim Kaijala won the mile run with a time of 4:14.35, while Bryan Scotland claimed first in the 1,000-meter run with a 2:30.28 clocking and Kyle Calvo finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a 8.24-second showing.
