ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men’s track & field team registered victories in 11 of the 17 events in defeating James Madison and Mount St. Mary’s during its final indoor home meet of the season on Saturday in Halsey Field House.

The Midshipmen (5-1) racked up 179 points, followed Mount St. Mary’s 101 points and James Madison’s 74 points in third place.

“Overall, we had a decent day and gave some other guys experience in different events,” stated Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey. “We tried moving people around for two reasons – first, to protect us from becoming stale in the same events and second, preserve our legs for the second half of the season. With the big meets and championships ahead, we need to get ourselves prepared.”

Junior Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) qualified for the IC4A Championship in a second event on Saturday. Harris, who had previously qualified in the 800-meter run, posted a first-place time of 1:02.69 in the 500-meter run. The clocking was more than three seconds faster than the second-place time and was only 0.38 second off the 10th-fastest time in school history.

For the third-consecutive meet, junior Darryl Hunter (Des Moines, Iowa) won the shot put with an IC4A-qualifing mark. Hunter uncorked a throw of 54’7-1/4” (16.64 meters) to claim first by nearly six feet.

Despite running in the event for the first time this season, sophomore Andrew Grant (Athens, Ga.) met the IC4A standard in the mile run. Grant crossed the finish line in 4:13.53, more than 10 seconds ahead of the second-place showing.

Registering an IC4A-qualifying effort for the third time this season in the triple jump was junior Dante Marshall (Hermitage, Pa.). Marshall nearly matched his season-best mark from last week with a distance of 47’9” (14.55 meters).

Junior Ron Belany (Haiku, Hawai’i) won the 55-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 7.80 seconds. In the sprints, junior William Ricks (Sussex, Va.) claimed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.26 seconds and senior Cameron Lindsay (Kernersville, N.C.) won the 400-meter dash with a 50.60-second showing. In the middle distance events, Jeff Sarchione (Alliance, Ohio) recorded a 1:56.38 clocking in the 800-meter run to win the event and freshman Matlack Gillin (Oreland, Pa.) followed with a first-place time of 2:34.77 in the 1,000-meter run.

Rounding out Navy’s event victories on Saturday was sophomore Christopher Bordino (Gastonia, N.C.) in the weight throw and senior Stephen White (Marietta, Ga.) in the high jump. Bordino released a throw of 51’11” (15.82 meters) and White cleared 6’8-1/4” (2.04 meters).
