My friend and I were talking for a while about colleges and the like, and we got somehow onto things to mention on your application besides your grades, legacy status, etc. He said, that I should mention significant donations to institutions, such as libraries, museums, schools, charities, etc. because he is. Should I go along his idea or just plug my ears and go on?

You can absolutely buy your way into college! Many o every year though this year doesn't look good for colleges on that front. If what he means is that his family has major bucks they donate and the college stands to benefit, the application is not the place. The proper way is to have a friend make an introduction to the college's development office. They will take it from there.
