Mentioning family friends?

<p>Would it help to say something like 'John Smith, a family friend attended ____ for ____ PHD and blablabla allowed me to see the benefits of that major.

<p>It adds a personal touch/feel plus more reason for choosing a major... but I guess there are obviously downsides. </p>

<p>Not sure it will impress… All depends on how you present it! If you don’t shove it in the Admission officer’s face, than I guess it’s ok. Just be careful! Best of luck!</p>
