Mentioning Iraqi On College Application

Yeah well I have a 4.0 and great SATs and IB/APs, good ECs, and everything but a hook.

I know Arabs are considered White and not URMs, but would mentioning that I'm Iraqi and my parents were refugees to America help me at all, or is it pointless to mention?

Thanks

definitely mention it somewhere; it’ll definitely help you stand out, and it could well help your chances since they’ll see that you’ll bring more diversity to the campus. it won’t get you a URM status but you’ll bring more diversity in another way, so you should definitely let them see that. good luck!! :)

Mention it.

If being Iraqi would harm your chance of going to a school, then it might not be a comfortable place for you to spend four years.

On the other hand, if it helps you, that’s a good thing.

In either case, it’s part of who you are, and helps you to find a good match where you can be successful.

Good luck!

Of course you talk about it: Just because it doesn’t get you the URM hook doesn’t mean you don’t add diversity and have a unique perspective to contribute! Being bi-cultural (and I assume bi-lingual) is a huge challenge and a huge asset, so don’t downplay it.
