mentioning major in UC essay

On the UC online application, it advises applicants (to UC Berkeley) to mention their intended major in their essay. I'm interested in applying for Bioengineering. However, my essay about goals and aspirations is about how my "world" inspired me to pursue competitive math, and I want to keep a single theme in the essay. Do you think mentioning Bioengineering is necessary for me to have a decent shot at admission? I think my stats are pretty good compared to the typical UC applicant...

Thanks!

If you can fit it in well then do it, otherwise then don't worry about it. They say they want you to discuss your major, but since your love of math is quite close to engineering anyways, it shouldn't matter.
