Hi!

I just received an email from NU to apply to the Mathematical Experience for Northwestern Undergraduates (MENU) program. Does anyone know much about this program? Is this worth taking/highly regarded? Or is this kinda like the Kaplan Humanities program?

Thanks!

What exactly do you mean by “Is this worth taking/highly regarded? Or is this kinda like the Kaplan Humanities program?”

Are you suggesting Kaplan is not worth taking or Highly Regarded? Because I can assure you, Kaplan is worth taking. MENU, on the other hand, is a horrible pain in the ass and not worth it unless you’re planning to go after the Kellogg certificate, and even then, it’s a monstrously hard program and best avoided. They send the email to everyone who got a 5 on an AP calc exam, which is WAY broader a range of people than should be invited.

Haha okay the question was badly worded >.< Not that Kaplan is not worth taking or anything, but people have told me it’s not as highly regarded as programs such as MMSS.

Thanks for the reply~ How does MENU help with the Kellogg certificate?

That is definitely true, but that’s in part because it’s newer and larger. That doesn’t make Kaplan non-selective or non-prestigious though!

Ah I was just going to ask about the MENU program, they emailed me too. Thanks for the info arbiter213, I don’t think I want to MENU then 9if it is a waste of time since I actually want to have time to enjoy myself at NU. Do you know what kind of math class we take instead if we get the 5 on AP calc AB and don’t choose to do MENU?

Assuming you actually want to continue math (WHY? WHYYYYYYY?) you can take any math class you want that doesn’t duplicate Integral Calculus. Basically, the default is the same content as MENU but less rigorous.

I didn’t get invited to MENU even though I got a 5 on Calc AB as a junior and a 5 on Calc BC this year. Is it a mistake?
Idrc though, because I don’t think that I want to overload my schedule with an Honors math class. (I’m in McCormick)

The McCormickness is why. There are math for engineers classes that are equivalent.

Alright thanks! How would I get invited to that?

Equivalent in content. Don’t worry about being “invited”- you can just register.

OP - read the “How hard is MEnu” thread (a little lower in order on this same page) to get a much better idea of what the program is all about…

Good luck.
