Merit Aid Appeals

Looking for info/tips on the successful merit aid appeal. Is there typically one meeting where the school looks at all the appeals for merit aid or is it on a day by day basis? Apparently there is an appeals committee I've been told. And I was asked to send a merit aid offer from a comparative school. My D wrote separate letters to the Dean of Admissions and the Director of Financial Aid. This is just a merit aid issue and not FA. And yes, teachers within the school are aware and involved on her behalf. Is there any other avenue that should be pursued? We updated the resume on some key items that have occurred since December. I feel like the clock is ticking and I need to be doing something.

We’re in the same boat, Potomom, waiting for answers on appeals. I think each school does this differently, though.

They may be waiting to see what other offers are turned down so they know what money they have left to play with…good luck Poto…It worked differently at the two schools we appealed to…One school made a decision within a day or two…another said it would go to committee and even told us which day that would be…let them have a few days (from when you appealed) and then contact them again to make sure things are turning…yes time is getting short but you still have a couple of weeks…best of luck…make sure they know it is her 1st choice school (if it is)

We have been very upfront about the fact that it’s her first choice school. She even has her housing application filled out (in German) and ready to go. I wasn’t sure whether to take the “squeaky wheel gets the grease” approach or the “try not to aggravate them too much” approach. I sent them my materials so they would have them on April 5. The girl in admissions said she was not sure when the appeals committee would be meeting. I have since dropped one more email just to confirm all my materials were received. Teachers know what we’re doing and admissions office confirmed that they had documentation from teacher on the appeal. I get concerned when I see other people who are getting quick responses from their appeal at other schools.

OK. Appeals committee meets tomorrow so we’ll know Thursday, no later than Friday.

You cannot compare apples and oranges and expect to draw any reasonable conclusion.

POTOmom,
check your email. We received a response today from one of the schools you may be appealing to.

YAY. You are right. D is going to Oberlin! She will be happy, she’s still at school and doesn’t know yet. Have you made a decision tenormama and S??

Congrats!!

Congratulations Poto Mom - I think it was clear to all of us, all along, that Oberlin was her first choice.

Congrats, POTOmom!!! So happy for you and your D. Now you can relax and enjoy the rest of the year!!! S is having a hard time choosing. We had good news today from Oberlin, too, so maybe this will help him decide in Oberlin’s favor. That would make his parents happy!

Hey Spirit Manager - First choice is an understatement. She wanted to buy the Oberlin hoodie 5 minutes after the audition.

Congrats POTO Mom; perhaps your daughter and I will be classmates next fall.

Yea! More Obies! Terrence, is this weekend your upcoming Yale weekend?

It is! Actually, not the WEEKEND, but I leave Sunday and stay through Wednesday! I will let you know all about it =].

Congratulations to you and your daughter, POTO Mom. My DS will be looking forward to meeting all the new first year students in Voice I am sure!
