i was wondering if american is generous with merit aid at all, a friend who goes there told me i was sure to get some money but i’m not sure if i should trust him haha. i have a 3.72/4.0 and a 2170 with 780 lit and 700 math I satII’s and good ecs.

American takes the top 15 per cent of applicants accepted into their Honors Program, solely based on SAT scores. If you are in Honors, you get Merit money. How much, I think, varies. If you don't get honors, I don't think you get much other than financial aid.

I had a little less than a weighted 4.0, 1320, a 5 on APUSH, 3 on English lang, and some 700's in SAT IIs, and got 12k a year.

That basically met my demonstrated FAFSA need. However, I think I got aid more for being the first in my family to go to school, and also because I had some really good extracurriculars, than for my decent grades and scores.

Once you get to school, however, don't count on getting more aide, no matter what your GPA is. You will get what you got going into school. The financial aid office is probably the least helpful office in a slew of bad administration. (AU has HORRIBLE red tape)

Nope, I missed the honors program (i think my sat was too low)

I'm actually glad I'm not in the honors program here - since I;m not planning on law or grad school right after graduation, it wouldn't have served much of a purpose for me. Instead i've been focusing my time on internships - I'm on my fourth, and I'm a sophomore now. I love AU - the location is unbeatable.

The school's full of red tape, the administration is horrible, and classes often fil lup WAY too early, esp. Poli sci, international studies, and PR. But I'm thrilled I'm here and wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Ok, about 15% of students are accepted into the honors program each year (based on SAT and GPA) and 30% of students receive merit-aid; however, you should think of it like a ven-diagram: not all honors students receive aid and not all those receiving aid are in the honors program although there is major overlapping. I did not qualify for the honors program but I'm receiving $18k a year from one AU scholarship. So yeah, I think they're generous.

Im pretty sure everyone in the honors program receives 18K or 25K merit scholarships(although the numbers may change this year). They literally have a chart to determine who gets into the honors program. I had a 1420 and around a 3.5 GPA and didn't get in(still got good merit money though). Going to a competitive high school really screwed me over. There are kids here that got into the honors program because they were ranked very high in pathetic high schools(would not crack the top 10% in my old high school). The student body here, even in the honors program, is really very disappointing.
