So I got the e-mail like a lot of other people the other day, but I’m one of those upper-middle class guys who don’t qualify for financial aid but cannot afford 45K per year without some sort of assistance. I was wondering if any students, parents, or others knew anything about the types of merit awards that AU gives out and whether or not you think I would qualify (and if so, what would you expect the award to be?). I know I should get the letter in a few days but I would like to have some idea of what to expect. Thanks!

Rank: This is what I thought would hold me back. 33/280
GPA: 3.85 UW, School doesn’t give weighted GPA but it would be one of the better ones in my school.
School: One of the best public schools in Wisconsin.
Courseload: Hardest in school. Every AP offered plus several more online.
SAT: 2210 (720 M, 740 R, 750 W)
SAT II: Dont remember exactly–something like 700 W. Hist, 740 Eng Lit, 770 US Hist?
EC: Not that great. Eagle Scout, Nationals for FBLA and DECA, Sports editor at school newspaper, Internship with Democratic Party of my state
Essay: Probably helped me–writing is my strong point.

I was about to ask the same question. I don't care about what I will get personally (I do, but just not for the purposes of this thread), so I won't post my stats. I just want to know what kind of awards they give out for merit- the range of their scholarships, what their scholarships are called etc

Happy at our house. If you go click on "financial aid award packages" and then go to the top of the page and click "forward year 2008-2009," the info is there. My son got $3,500 per year in unsubsidized Stafford and the $27,000 per year Presidential scholarship. Relief!

Yea, the maximum ammount of need based aid I'd recieve from American still would not be enough. I could definitely use some good merit aid.

Is it pretty much based on just gpa/class rank and test scores or do they award merit scholarships on a more holistic basis? I have a 1310/2000 and 3.88 at a college prep school where I'm also top 10%-15% in my class of 88. Do I have a shot at some serious merit money?

Actually, for certain students, in my year the top scholarship was 30,000. The presidential scholarship my admission year was 25,000. So, since some of you guys are getting 27,000 I assume the top tier kids are getting somewhere close to 32,000. Granted, I only know of three students who got this but for some students whose stats imply American is a safety can really benefit.

Hmmm. I wonder what kind of stats you'd have to get for that! Must be amazing. As I said, my son is 4/802, 1560 (800M, 760V), with a GPA of 107 and 12 APs. He got the $27,000.

i dont think it has anything to do with the field because some people dont even put down an intended major simply because they are undecided - and i feel thats a little unfair that that may disadvange someone, but i may be wrong... but as we have seen - with all the scholarships they give out, there is a range of awards.
