Merit aid at Miami of Ohio

Does international students receive scholarships? I have a 31 ACT, so I don’t think I will

I found the Merit Scholarship chart on Miami’s site to be fairly accurate (we’re in state). My sons are back-to-back and both applied to Miami. Last year and this year. Both received admittance around 12/20 and their merit scholarship via snail mail about a week later. One was CS and, this year, S in business. Suggestion-you can email the your area admission counselor and ask if all merit scholarships have gone out. They could still be going out but, for us it was the same both years.

I wasn’t aware that the merit scholarship could be applied to room and board. Is this correct?

@JKrazney2 if a student’s scholarship amount exceeds tuition, the extra is applied to room and board. If a student moves off campus, the extra is refunded to the student to use for educational expenses such as rent, books, other fees. Scholarships just can’t exceed the cost of attendance.

just curious on your opinion, from reading the following thread, any money beyond tuition and related fees is TAXABLE income. Money applied to Room and board is also taxable.Let me know what you think. TIA

I have not heard back about merit aid yet, I was accepted in the early EA round. I’m a bit puzzled because I have pretty high statistics (32 ACT in a single sitting, my school doesn’t report GPA but it would be about 3.8) I have talked to people with lower stats who have received money. Does anyone know why I may not have gotten anything?

@college4747 Call the admissions office and ask them. That’s going to give you better information than asking us all to guess.

@college4747 I called admissions with a few questions after my daughter’s acceptance and they were very helpful and transparent. A call should help clear things up for you, especially if there has been some sort of error.

Thank you for this information! This is a game changer for us, as I also receive a grant from my employer that can be applied only to tuition and mandatory fees (not R&B, etc.). We are looking forward to attending the Make It Miami event in March.

@JKrazney2 May I suggest you contact the financial aid office and ask about their policy on outside grants/scholarships. Some will take away from your need based aid. I don’t want to give specific information and lead you the wrong way but it would be worth the phone call.

@BreakfastClub1 I will definitely get the final word from a financial aid counselor at Miami when we visit in March. Thank you!

@JKrazney2 If your employer pays you the money directly then you don’t have to worry about Miami reducing your aid(although it could bump up your income and thus lower your need award for the following year). If they pay it directly to the school then yes, Miami will reduce your need based aid by that same amount.

What does it mean on mt portal when they say that my final award will be on my acceptance package? Does it mean that I might get more money than what was on my portal?

I received a HUGE merit package from University of South Carolina, making tuition significantly cheaper than Miami, even with my $24,000 scholarship. Do you think I could call the financial aid office and try to get a bigger offer from Miami? According to the merit aid chart, I am eligible for more money than I received based on stats.

Miami definitely does a holistic review. We got $16,000 a year and with scores no where near what people are reporting here. This is not financial aid, it was a merit package. She has a 3.5 gpa but only a 23 ACT score. However, tons of ECs and recommendations.

Congratulations! Would you be willing to share more info re: EC’s? Are you OOS? Thanks.

OOS daughter received $17000. 33 ACT, 3.96 GPA unweighted, 4.8 weighted. 2 sport athlete, lots of EC.

Still considering

My son was accepted on 12/1. He has a 3.94 GPA with 3 AP classes and a superscore of 30 on the ACT. To date we have not gotten any merit. I do not know if he will end up at Miami, but we would like to at least sit down and compare all of his options. Do you think he is not getting any scholarship money? Should we contact the school? Do we just wait for the information?

@cubbiefan0711 Definitely contact the school. We heard a week to 10 days after acceptance.

Thanks @BreakfastClub1. I just got off the phone with them–apparently that letter got lost in the mail–$17,000 a year–good to know
