Merit aid at UCONN and UMaine?

How is the merit aid for out of state students there?

What state are you from? University of Maine Orono offers instate tuition for students from certain states.

In terms of merit aid for OOS…these are instate flagship universities. Their obligation is to first provide aid to students IN their states.

GPA: 94.6 unweighted 95.7 weighted as of February this year.
ACT: 34 (36 Reading, 35 English, 31 Math, and 35 Science) Probably going to send this.
SAT (New): 1450 (710 Reading + Writing, 740 Math)

What do you need your net costs to be?

Your threads are all over the place. You’ve indicated that you won’t get need based aid, and need merit.

You’re taking stabs in the dark which could mean you could end up with unaffordable schools. WHICH schools are you applying to that you know FOR SURE that you’ll get enough merit to be affordable???

How much will your parents pay each year? What do you need your net costs to be?

What is your major and career goal?

@mom2collegekids

Major: Engineering, Possibly civil.
Cost that parents can pay: Not much. I have said before that $25000 a year would be the top, and that would be a bit of a stretch. Loans are also an option.

Only colleges right now that I could afford would be Stony Brook or Binghamton (full tuition scholarships, but state schools anyway so it doesn’t matter bc they are so cheap). I am also considering ESF which would be the same situation.

Sorry that I am not so specific but there are a lot of unknowns about the financials.

Ok…ill ask. Why UConn? Why UMaine?

Will they be affordable without aid?

You could apply to UA, full tuition plus $2500. Or take a chance at competitive merit at Pitt or OSU.

But application and all materials have to be received by Nov 1 at OSU. Apply to Pitt soon too. Send ACT and SAT scores.

Apply now to Alabama…Free tuition plus 2500 per year. Great safety for you.

Is the $25k the amount that your parents have said that they’ll pay each year?

DD is in UA’s civil engineering program now as a junior, getting the scholarships you would be eligible for if you apply by scholarship deadline. Lots of high stat and OOS kids studying STEM, eng/CS, as well as business and other fields of study. Within your budget. Great opportunities too, with honors programs, internships and Co-op.

Be careful re UA … they have fantastic merit aid, and it is the most incredible campus (my son was admitted to the honors college there), but their housing is very expensive and, after following a FB parents’ page for UA, I was concerned about housing after the first year. Apartments in safe areas of Tuscaloosa seem to be at a premium.
