merit aid confusion

So I was notified about my admission to NYU Stern last week and I was a bit confused about NYU's merit aid policies. Other kids who got into NYU at my school said they were waiting for their merit aid offers from the university, and I asked how they were getting aid since they didn't qualify for need based. One of them mentioned filling out the CSS, and even though she wasn't getting any need based aid this would give her merit scholarships opportunities. I never filled out FAFSA/CSS since I knew I wouldn't qualify. Now I'm regretting this because I certainly would like an opportunity at getting merit aid from an expensive school like NYU.

I know NYU doesn't give a lot of merit aid, but if my stats are competitive is it possible I could still be considered for scholarships if I haven't filled out any special forms? Also, does NYU have scholarship opportunities for admitted students that I can apply to for this year or next year?

Your questions were addressed partially in another recent thread:

NYU DOES NOT REQUIRE THE CSS; ONLY THE FAFSA. According to 2 posters from the above thread cited, you can still submit the FAFSA for some consideration, but you will be last in line because you did not submit it by the 2/1/11 deadline. NYU’s aid to many students adhering to the FA app deadline was less than ideal, so do not expect too much. However, you may still get something???, which is better than 0.

Always submit the FAFSA by the deadline for any NYU scholarship consideration by the school, even if you do not think you qualify for FA based on family income or need. All continuing students with scholarships should also remember to fill out their FAFSA annually (this year’s deadline was 3/1/11 for continuing students).
