Are there any students who have transferred to George Washington University that can tell me how much they received from merit aid, scholarships, grants? Anything not including loans.
Don’t count on anything as a transfer
I’m not sure why you want to know what other folks have gotten for aid. That really has no bearing on what YOU might get.
- GWU does not guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students. This means that ther is a good possibility that your family contribution will exceed your FAFSA EFC. In addition, the school uses the Profile.
- Need based aid eligibility will be determined by YOUR family income and assets. It doesn't matter what others have received....it is your financial data that will determine your award.
- The best merit aid is awarded to incoming freshmen, nit transfer students. BUT even with that...merit aid would be based on the strength of your application, and what others receive really wouldn't be any help to you at all.
- GWU is one of THE most costly universities in this country.
- You would be guaranteed the Direct Loan if your family completes the FAFSA. But you don't really want to know about that.

Averages mean NOTHING in terms of your award. You could get $0 in aid.
In addition, it sounds like you are a CA resident? Are there NO public universities in CA where you could go to college?
How much can your family contribute to your college costs annually? What is your GPA at your current college?
Have you run the net price calculator for GWU? It won’t be particularly accurate as it’s designed for incoming freshmen…but it might give you a ball park.
And…unless I’m reading this incorrectly…this student hasn’t even started at Penn State. He is an incoming freshman…and already wants to transfer? Really?
Average aid awarded means nothing at all to you. Average means that some get a very high offer because they are highly desirable and have high stats and some get nothing because they don’t need to attract them. Or they get thrown a bone of some token amount. But that is only for freshmen. For transfers it is very hard to get any aid. They don’t really need to pay up for stats because those stats are not reported anywhere and don’t help the ranking. As a matter of fact, some schools will take transfers with great character and life experience but rocky history in high school, such as military who are doing good work in a CC now that they have matured. They don’t hurt the rankings and they come with military benefits too. Many colleges just focus on need aid for transfers if they have the budget, they don’t always try to meet need either.
Bottom line is that you are going to get the best aid as a freshman. If you can’t afford your college don’t go. Take a gap year and reapply everywhere. You need a 4 year plan, not a 1 year plan.
Merit aid is a recruiting tool to boost the number of high-scoring student enrollment. Only fall freshman scores are used in the school’s avg SAT score calculation. Therefore, colleges don’t need to “recruit” transfers.
If GWU thinks it already has a high likelihood fish on the hook, it isn’t going to put out bait.
