Can someone direct me to a thread that might list schools known to give merit aid to transfer students?
If one does not exist I am looking for schools that would give merit aid to a transfer.

What kind of schools are you targeting? I received merit aid at Northern Mich and Eastern Mich, but those arent the schools people are normally looking for on CC. Though, I did receive about a 1,000 renewable grant from both. My friend got tons of Scholarships at Eastern including a full housing scholarship.

I had a really hard time finding scholarships as a transfer student, and now that I have actually transferred I can’t apply for any of the scholarships for continuing students yet because I don’t have a GPA here. That’s definitely something to consider for someone who needs the aid. It’s a rough road for transfer students.

The University of Minnesota’s tuition was recently reduced for out of staters; it is now 12,500/year. The College of Liberal Arts offers transfer merit scholarships of $2,500, bringing tuition down to $10,000/year. Go Gophers!

Other branches of the U of Minnesota also offer merit aid for transfer students. If you are looking at liberal arts, consider the noteworthy public liberal arts school University of Minnesota Morris. If you add merit aid to the already very reasonable tuition there, the cost of attendance would be pleasantly low.

Probably private schools.
The problem she is running into with her instate schools is that she is going to be ready to transfer at the end of next summer 2010. The instate public schools require that the 60 transferable units be completed by the end of spring 2010 for a fall 2010 admission. Due to budget cuts it is looking pretty unlikely that the instate schools will take any transfers for winter or spring 2011. It leaves her in a hard spot. To attend an instate public the most affordable option she would have to wait out another year to Fall 2012.

This thread lists a few schools, I haven’t followed up on the information though so they may be very restrictive:

For each college, this site shows if it has merit aid for transfers, so it might be a good quick way to get information:

mom60, could she possibly take a few extra hours either in class or online to finish up in spring 2010 instead of summer 2010? How many hours was she planning to take that summer semester? Perhaps she could find a few easier courses and carry an overload just to get her credit total up.

Boysx3-I don’t think she can. After spring semester she will need 6 or 9 units. I wish she had asked for my advice a few months earlier. She is only taking 12 units this semester and could have handled 15 or 18.
She is a relative who has had some health issues for the last 5 yrs. She seems to have gotten them under control and has been able to handle school continuously for the last 2 semesters. Her parent is not much help but is willing to pay instate tuition and might be willing to pay a private tuition if there is some merit aid in the 8,000-10,000 per yr range. Her grades are great. I think she said all A’s since she has been back in school. 2 B’s and 4 A’s from her previous attempt at college. Strong Sat scores from high school and a strong high school record. (I think at this point most of the schools will not look at HS or SAT scores) She has been out of high school 4 or 5 yrs.
Just spoke with her. Preference to be in Ca or possibly East Coast but not in an area that has too much snow. Is considering Boston and NYC and maybe DC. No to Midwest or Mountain states.
