Merit aid, Honors program, and other scholarships

I was wondering what my chances are for getting accepted into the Honors program. Also, what do you think my chances are for gettin a large amount of merit aid? I want to major in journalism and political science, if that matters any.

Also, what scholarships are offered at AU? Are there any scholarships like the Morehead at UNC or the Jefferson at UVA?

Anywho…here are my stats:
Academics:
GPA- 3.82
SAT- 2150 (750 Math, 700 Reading, 700 Writing; I’m retaking though because I’ve only taken once.)
SAT IIs- None yet, but I’m taking math, chem, and spanish.
Class Rank- My school doesn’t give them, but I’m pretty sure top 15%
After graduation, I will have taken 9 APs (Calculs BC, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, US History, English Language, English Literature, Spanish, Spanish Literature) and 8 honors classes (English I, English II, Geometry, Algebra I, Algebra II, Precalculus, Biology, Chemistry).

ECs:
Habitat for Humanity- Vice President
Walkabout (outdoors club)- Student Instructor
The Play (theatre)- Secretary
Junior Class Vice President
Writing Center Tutor
Peer Tutor
Spanish Club
Varsity Tennis
International Club
Political Forum (club)
Model Congress
Spirit Commitee
Earth Advocates
Round Square (went on an international conference trip)
I went on a People to People trip for tennis
I went on a Walkabout (my schools outdoor club) trip to India (trekking) and on one to Costa Rica (kayaking)
I went on a LeadAmerica trip for international diplomacy

these "what are my chances" posts always crack me up. we are students, not admissions officers! anything you hear from this website will be peoples opinions, not fact. my advice would be to stop worrying and enjoy your summer. que sera sera!

but having said all that, you look like a solid candidate! good luck.

Well I guess my question was more along the lines of: what merit aid is available at American? Anything like the Morehead or Jefferson?!?!

American has lots of merit aid. they have the presidential which is 25k a year, and the deans which is 15-18 thousand a year. they also have other ones that are less. It seems that many people received the deans and presidential scholarship.

Accoring to the "stats" of people I've talked to, you are a candidate for the honors program, but not a shoe in by any means.

Yes, AU is very well-known for its merit scholarships. You can almost definitely expect the $15K scholarship, but it's hard to get the $25K scholarship.

Does anyone know the average stats of people accepted to the honors program?

It's very close to like 1440-1460 SAT and a perfect GPA. That's not exact, but it should be right around that.

Bravesboy--were you accepted to any schools that were ranked way higher than AU? In other words, did you pass up any top schools for AU honors, and if so, why?

I'm a bit of a unique case, since I had gotten into the UGA honors program through early action and didn't apply anywhere else because I didn't think any high ranked school would give enough money. My efc is relatively high. The hope scholarship in Georgia also makes UGA tuition-free for me. However, over Xmas break (after New Years) I became fairly certain I wanted to do PolySci/IR instead of possibly Business and other things. After visiting the PolySci department at UGA, I was surprised at how mediocre, or more like horrible, the program was. I scrambled and BSed applications to 4 schools in a frenzy. So I got into GA Tech, UW-Madison, American, and Emory. I got waitlisted at Emory even though I essentially didn't write one of the two required essays, lol.

Was this incredibly dumb? Extremely. I was swamped with work in the fall and just sort of became complacent, which still isn't an excuse. My stats are competitive for all but the top ivies, but stupidity trumps intelligence. Anyways, I feel a little less regretful because many of my friends, so excited by their admission to top schools, are dishing out $30K-$40K a year, which so isn't worth it. Some have received money though. It's not all that bad for me. If I don't like AU, I transfer out in a year, but I've heard too many good things about the school for that to be likely.

Bottom line, I would turn down all the high ranked schools, except the top ivies, if I had to pay for them in full.

This isn't to say that I would recommend anyone falling into the same mindless trap I did. Everyone won't be so lucky in finding a match.
