Merit aid sent with acceptance letter?

thanks Linymom for all the good info

My daughter received her acceptance letter yesterday but no mention of scholarship. Was this defined in the letter?

Can those of you who received Centennial scholarships please tell us if you are RI residents or OOS? Also, when you say “$12,000”, is that per year or in total for 4 years?

Our D received acceptance letter yesterday. We live in RI, so maybe that had something to do w/ her only getting a $3,000/year Centennial? IOW, that brings the tuition cost down to ~7k/year. If they’re giving $12k/yr to OOS, that’s still ~$12k/yr. So maybe they realize that for RI’ers, $7k/yr is still the best deal around or maybe our D just didn’t impress them that much? (FWIW, UConn offered her a 1/2 tuition = $11,600/yr.)

My D’s letter indicated in the acceptance letter that she would receive a Centenniel Scholarship for $10k PER YEAR, as long as her GPA is a 3.0.

We are out of state – from NY – and the tuition info that came with the acceptance said that tuition was $27K. The scholarship would bring it to $17K per year… then add on room and board.

This is still a lot more than the SUNY schools, which are less for both in-state and out-of-state. Of course my D wants to get out of NY. We will see where she gets accepted and weigh the costs, along with other benefits.

Since she received the acceptance to URI, she also got accepted from UConn, but there is no indication of money in that letter. Her GC says that will come later (I guess, if it comes at all).

LINYMOM… my D must be a clone of yours… the exact same scenario except we are from NJ. ( “I don’t want to go to school in NJ” ). In reality, with limited exception ( based upon certain programs offered at some schools ) most of these state schools are pretty much the same, IMO. Time will dictate things.

LINYMOM, our D was also accepted to UConn, EA. Her merit scholarship (1/2 tuition OOS = $11,600/yr) DID come w/ the acceptance letter, so I don’t think they send them out separately.

The UConn Scholarship and acceptance to Honors does come together with the acceptance letter.
My problem is that even with these 12K scholarships to OOSers for other state’s schools the cost is still about 25K per year if you include Room and Board. I just feel like that is just too much for a state school. We are in NJ. Son has been accepted to Rutgers and awaiting scholarship info, which will probably bring the cost down a lot. Of course he wants to get out of NJ, so we’ll see what happens.

That’s a valid poitn mamajay. For some reason, “the grass is always greener OOS”. But I’m sure you know that not all state schools are created equal. I’m pretty sure UConn has a better rep than URI; not sure about vs. Rutgers.

Our concerns w/ state schools are the size, large lecture hall classes, lack of personal interaction w/ professors, potential to not graduate in 4 years, etc…

We’re hoping Roger Williams U offers our D a Presidential scholarship, which could bring their tuition down to around UConn range (after UConn’s OOS 1/2 tuition scholarship). Though not as prestigious, it might be a better fit.

Good luck to you.

Maybe being in the Honors program helps alleviate some of the problems with State schools that I am also concerned with, but the cost is still too high. My son has already received the Presidential Scholarship from Tulane, which would bring their cost down to about 25K. I would sooner pay it for a private school than public.

In the end, I think the difference between most state schools is nominal, with some exceptions of course. I think what a kid does at school ( what he studies ) and how he does it is more important by far. My S goes to Emory Univ., enjoys it immensely, but probably would have been just as happy at one of several other schools, UMd, UVa, etc… ( state schools ).

I just saw i was accepted online! I haven’t got the letter yet, hope i get at least some $.
