Not invited to Johnson scholarship weekend, but given opportunity to interview for a full-tuition scholarship. Was wondering if W&L provides merit aid beyond tuition to students outside of the Johnson program. My understanding is that the school “meets need” but it is not super clear what that means. The number we got via the NPC on their website would be workable with our budget but I wasn’t sure if the Johnson program is factored into that NPC and affects the results. I guess my basic question is whether there are kids who have received merit/grant aid beyond what their EFC was other than those who receive the Johnson scholarship.
Yes, but my son was a Johnson Scholarship finalist. He, along with one of his roommates and a HS friend (who declined the offer) all received the Robert E. Lee Scholarship. I do believe it’s somewhat tied to your EFC, as S’ offer was slightly different than the HS friend. It covered almost all of tuition and brought the total down a bit below our EFC. The nice perk is that is came with a guarantee to cover any tuition increase over the four years. And, since it was merit aid, all of S’ outside scholarships were stackable. His first year was nearly free. After he enrolled, the scholarship was changed to the Earl T. Jones scholarship. It was the same deal, but a different pot of money so to speak. This one was given to one in-state student, I believe. And I don’t think either of them came with a minimum GPA, but I could be mistaken.
However, we did think we would save $$$ when he studied at St. Andrews as that COA was significantly lower. But, the school just adjusted the scholarship amount and it was roughly the same. A bit disappointing, but it was probably in the fine print somewhere. LOL.
