Merit aid

Has anyone received their offer yet? There is an intriguing envelope here from Financial Aid but of course I cannot open it, and my x-ray glasses are in for repair. Did anyone else receive one?

There is an envelope waiting for my daughter as well, and although I held it up to the light, I couldn’t read it :). Butler said they were mailing merit aid letters this week, so I expect that’s what this is. Anxious to see what it says…

My daughter received hers in the mail today and was offered $6,000/yr. She was hoping for much more so is very disappointed as it her 2nd top choice school. Trinity University in San Antonio being her first choice which offered slightly more. Other schools, lower on her list, have offered much more.

hope everyone gets good offers !
mine hasn’t come in the mail yet…I’m all the way in NY.

EWParent, what’s your daughter’s GPA & SAT/ACT

My daughter’s stats are ACT 30, SAT 1930, unweighted GPA 3.35 at HS that is nationally recognized for its rigorous courses. She has taken all AP/IB/Honors classes. This is her smallest merit aid offer yet. Of course we will have to wait until she gets all her award letters to see if she qualifies for any grants, need based aid or work study, etc. Since Butler is a $40,000+ per year school and our EFC should be around $25,000 I am hoping there may be some need based grants available.
It seems Butler’s basketball team beat Syracuse University recently in an unexpected upset which brought the school a lot of national attention. The number of applications they received this year this was more than 100% over last year as a result.

HI EWparent…
Thanks for the information…I am also hoping for some merit aid for my son and waiting on the letter…hoping for more like in the double digits for merit. I cant find anything online on what is the average merit aid… I did read there is also departmental scholarships and you have to have a min of 27 ACT… so maybe your daughter will get some additional merit money from that…
6,000 does seem low… where was her class rank?

OK, D got home and read her letter. She got $15,000… which doesn’t make it as good a deal as some other colleges so far. She had a 34 ACT. I would love to hear more about the departmental merit awards though, if anyone has more info. D was very thankful for the merit aid, but we still need to be practical about her best option. It’s so expensive!!

thanks buckeye for the information. Son has a 33 ACT…top 5% 3.8uw and 4.2 w 9AP by end of senior year. Are those numbers similar to your daughters???
We are planning a trip to Purdue, Butler and Uof Michigan in Feb…

Hi GoGiantsfan29, my daughter’s school does not rank. There are only 50 students in her class.

Good luck to you EWParent… I know this whole thing can be stressful… they work hard and we want to send them where they want to go…

Giantsfan, yes, your son’s stats are similar to my daughter’s. Maybe your letter will come tomorrow. I have never been to Michigan or Purdue. Husban’s brother went to Purdue and my husband always said the campus didn’t appeal to him. Michigan is supposed to be great, but we are Ohioans, and therefore Buckeyes : ). Have you been to Butler before? We had a really nice experience there this summer. Campus is small but not too small, and the people were all very nice and helpful. It’s next to a nice residential area of Indianapolis (and Indianapolis is a really nice town.).

My daughter got her award notice this afternoon—she ended up with a merit based offer of $10,000. She is in the top 5% of her class (400 kids); her standardized test scores were 1240 (Math/Verbal). Based on the other award offer she has received to date, I would say this was a fair/competitive offer, but on the low side of fair/competitive. I may be completley wrong about this, but I am under the impression that Butler does not have a huge endowment relative to the size of the university, and therefore merit awards may tend to be a bit less than what yuo might receive at other schools.

Hi… no we have never been to the midwest to look at colleges… We visited 16 colleges over the last years but all up and down the east coast. But, when my son put pharmacy into the mix recently …he decide to apply to some additional Pharmacy colleges. So far I like Boston College the best… smaller size… near boston in a residential area… so sounds like Butler would be similar… If he gets 15,000 i would be happy with that… it puts it in the running with others…Will be looking for that letter tomorrow…thanks…

She finally got home and opened the letter, $15,000 per year, which is nice, but as others have said, it’s an expensive school. EW Butler went to the NCAA finals last year and just barely missed upsetting Duke. It was pretty cool. Giantsfan, my s goes to Purdue and loves it; it’s a pretty campus, IMO, and we’ve been pleased. He’s in a technical major, however, don’t know much about the rest of it. On our first visit there we were complimented by the “compliment boys” who went on to national acclaim for their practice of standing on campus one day a week and complimenting every person they saw. My son has lost his wallet several times and each time it has been returned to him–once he lost it in another state and someone from purdue picked it up and brought it back to campus and returned it to him. It’s a very Midwestern place. Very different feel from Michigan, which is the perfect big school in the perfect college town, if you can take the cold.

When we received my daughter’s acceptance letter they had her major as exploratory studies, not her planned dual major of Psychology/German. I wonder if that may have impacted her merit award. We will have to contact Butler on Monday to correct her major and ask about is impact on merit aid.

My daughter received $7000 , which is disappointing considering how expensive Butler is. It’s hard to consider going there when other schools have offered so much more, even if it is an excellent school.

would be interesting to see if major played a role in the merit aid… Anyone willing to post what their major and their merit aid? Someone just told me that Butler does not give out much for the Pharmacy program… waiting for the mail tomorrow.

The merit aid letter says “if you change your major into the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences your eligibility for this scholarship will be subject to review and adjustment”.

EWparent - great… I bet he gets nothing…Pharmacy is not even set in stone so if I would have know that I would have put down another major that he is considering…ugh… this is stressful…

Mine’s a dancer, but she hasn’t yet auditioned, so I’m pretty sure the aid is unrelated to the major.
