Merit Aid

Anyone give any insight on last year's merit aid? A little concerning that the average merit was only $9K.

That can be misleading but it's still concerning at first glance.

I guess that would be for the Ignatius scholarship that has a $12,000.00 max. (guarrantied for 4 yrs!). There also a number of scholarships you can apply to go to marquette.edu - prospective students - scholarships. I believe deadline is Feb. 15. Will you have any need based aid? They do give out grants. My sophomore son between merit/grants/work study gets about 1/2 COA.

I got accepted today with the Ignatius Scholarship of $12000 per year. :)

KingJulian, if you do not have financial need, it is unlikely that your merit aid will exceed the Ignatian.

@Phoenix - how did you find out about the aid?

@dbwes - I am not looking for more than the IS. I just think a max of $12K with an average of $9K is not a good sign.

Ignatius is notified in a separate letter during February, I just checked and is up to $14,000.00 this year. This aid is guarranteed for 4 years. Make sure that offer from other schools are guarranteed for 4 years. Check for other competitive scholarships in the Marquette site. I would still fill out the fafsa, is free, and you could qualify for some low interest loans. Do not know how Phoenix found out so soon. Actually a merit scholarship for $14,000.00 with no financial need, no requirements except for a college application and guarranteed for 4 years is not too bad. I have 3 in college and the last one was a Freshman this year so I have had plenty of experiences with merit scholarships in the past three years. Also, remember the merit award will be based on gpa, extracurriculars, comm. service, etc. So it just depends on the strength of the application.

News, I called the admissions office when I saw PHX post. They stated FA letters went out this week (I do not know if that includes the Ignatius).

The whole point of my post is that other Jesuits - Xavier and SLU - appear to give out more Merit than Need. MU appears to do the opposite - which isn;t great news when your EFC is low.

Some schools do not even give out merit aid, did you get offers from Xavier, SLU? and remember check if they guarranty the emount for 4 years. Some schools give you high merit aid to get you to commit, but aid is not for 4 years and they will lower aid every year. Even if your EFC is low you might get grants from Marquette. If the student has really good credentials go for the competive scholarships offered at the site with deadline of Feb. 15. Yes the FA package includes Ignatus, work study, grants, and loan offers.

14K is not that bad. I was awarded 16K from SLU for 4 years and 15K from Xavier for 4 years. I’m pretty sure that Marquette’s tuition is slightly lower than SLU’s so it’s all pretty close. Marquette does offer other scholarships that you can apply for (more for those in Wisconsin) and they offer a chance to receive a scholarship by taking an exam in your major.

Yes, both my Ds also applied to SLU and got scholarships that year that were 2,000 than the Ignatius. At the time, the tuition was 2,000 more than Marquette’s. Also, at that time, some of the SLU money was applied to housing, which meant the amount would go down if they moved off campus junior year. I heard SLU was going to change that, though.

wait, I know that the separate scholarships (Pere Marquette, Urban Scholars, etc) have a deadline of Feb 15, so we obviously won’t find out until probably March. But have the Ignatius scholarships been sent out yet? Or are they waiting until next week? I’m a little confused haha.

BC, some merit scholarship notifications went out the mail late this week. I don’t know which ones but PHX heard about the ignatius.

My daughter heard about the Ignatius scholarship yesterday and also got something called a Magis award. Overall, I thought it was pretty generous compared to what one of my other daughters gets at her school.

That will be the total merit aid your daughter will get from Marquette and is guaranteed for 4 yrs.

The Magis award is sort of an add-on to the Ignatius award and is for “leadership.” It is not technically a different scholarship.

My son applied to MU last year and I was pretty pumped for $11k as he had a 31 ACT, Eagle Scout and GPA of 3.6. His award - $8k. We were devastated. You will see posts on here from the 12k crowd but read the fine print. They are typically NMSF or similar. I pushed back on my son’s award and was told that 3500 was the average. Can you imagine? A 3500 scholarship against 40k? It’s a joke. And the others such as Pere Marquette and alumni are for very small populations. Ignatius is basically it for 90% of incoming kids, and 5k is a lot more likely than 14k, sorry to say.

Beast, in their defense, they give a lot more money for need than merit. There is no balance of need/merit that is going to make everybody happy (unless maybe you fall into both).

Having said that, we got more than I anticipated for the Magis.

My S had a 31 ACT, 3.6 GPA, strong essays, and lots of ECs, and just received a $12k/year Ignatius and $2k/year Magis. He applied to several Marquette-like schools (Creighton, Loyola, Gonzaga) and this is the biggest merit award he has been offered. I’m impressed with Marquette, but of course what I think makes no difference as he ponders his decision. Good luck to all.

FKB, I started this thread as I had concerns with the coming offer. An average of $9K looked like trouble - but averages can be deceiving. Quite happy wiht our offer as well.

Just got my letter and also received a nice offer with Ignatius + Magis.

Same here erp, I got my Ignatius + Magis scholarship notice today. I was relatively pleased with the offer.
