How generous is the financial aid given for Nat'l Merit Finalists? On the school's web site(http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/level3.asp?id=67), it says that they give money, but it doesn't tell exactly how much.

$ 9,348,430,327.00

Thank you, Esquared, for once again being thorough and accurate.

We give $2,000 for national merit finalists who have demonstrated financial need. We give $1,000 for national merit finalists with no financial need.

If one only makes Commended, but has listed UChicago as the top choice, will the Admissions office see that, and will they care?

It's what I'm here for, Libster.

Thanks. Does one have to be a finalist to get aid (i.e., can you get aid for being commended/sf, as drummerdude said)? Also, is there a difference in application fees for one submitted online and one by paper?

What about the other merit aid Chicago offers? How tough is the competition for the College Honor Scholarships?

They offer about twenty full tuition scholarships per year. They offer about ninety or so partial tuition scholarships.

Obviously, it's very hard to get one of these. I'm going go out on a limb and speculate that numbers alone won't get you these scholarships. Your essay, under represented minority status, your past, and anything that makes you particulary unique are important for such scholarships.

I wonder, if one gets one of these scholarships, can one get financial aid? In other words, is it possible for UChicago to PAY you to go there? If so, for many different reasons, I am extremly envious of these twenty lucky souls..

HAHA No of course they aren't going to PAY you. The merit aid reduces the financial aid, starting with loans and work study (so merit aid is still a net +).

I think that you have to be a finalist. I think that we don't offer money to commended scholars.

The competition for College Honor Scholarships is extremely tough. What is 20 divided by 9,500? That is how tough the competition is. What Blaze991 says is right -- numbers alone won't get you there. These people also get financial aid to cover the rest of the cost of attendance. But we don't pay people to come here.

And the application fee is not different for online versus on paper. Read my post on the blog: http://uncommonapplication07-08.blogspot.com
