Merit aid?

Anyone think its possible to get merit aid later since some money from people who reject USC will be opened up? Is there some sort of waitlisting they do for merit aid?

I don't know about that, but I think there are a few scholarships open to continuining students that you can apply for for your 2nd, 3rd, etc year.

other than that, I would guess that it's possible to get some merit money, but not a half or full ride, since those scholarships had to be interviewed for

don't take my complete word for it, since i'm not even sure what happened.. but i originally was not in the running for either trustee or presidential (just had dean's), but recently received a letter saying that i had received the presidential 0_o i'm guessing it's because i'm a nmf and put usc as my first choice, but we're not supposed to know until late april about awards, i think.. so i'm not really sure if they just opened up some aid or if they just notified nmfs early of their awards..

Most schools offer aid to students knowing that a certain % (that they calculate based on formulas & past experience) will turn down, so there really isn't "extra" money when kids turn down offers.

That said, sometimes there are smaller merit awards that have not yet been made & may be handed out between now & when school starts in the fall. If you have specific questions, you can ask your USC admissions counselor about this (ours was very helpful last year when S was an entering freshman).

USC does give 1/2 tuition Presidential Scholarships to ALL NMFs who list them as 1st choice by the deadline.

HImom, several people have posted saying that as NMFs, in addition to the Presidential they received an additional $1000 because they didn't get the $2500 scholarship directly from the NM Corporation. Do you know anything about that?
PS Thank you for all the info you've posted over the past months. I've learned so much from you.

My S got 1/2 tuition presidential award from USC as a NMF. He also got $1000/year from USC as a NMF instead of the $2500 one-time award from NMC. I'm not sure if ALL NMFs got this award or not and whether it mattered if you were also getting some need-based FAid. My S only got merit awards. He was also awarded a small USC engineering merit award as a freshman, renewable for all 4 years too.

Thank you HImom. My D is also eligible only for merit aid. I'm wondering how and when you received notice of the other $1000. She cannot log into the gateway or oasis sites.

Go to USC.edu and click on admissions, undergraduate. Then, click on contact us & look for the admissions counselor that covers the geographic area where you live & contact him/her. They're very helpful & can be reached by phone or e-mail.
Good luck!
