Merit Aid?

Does Bryn Mar give any Merit-based aid? I looked on the website and didn’t find anywhere saying it does, but it also didn’t say that it didn’t, so I just wanted to check.

I'm about 99% sure that Bryn Mawr doesn't offer any merit-based aid. They are, however, pretty good about need-based aid, at least in my experience!

Actually, Bryn Mawr does offer a bit of merit aid although they do not publicize it. Two years ago, my d was offered a partial merit scholarship (15 K/yr). At the Bryn Mawr accepted students' event that spring, we heard one other family speak of receiving an identical offer. Neither family had filled out FAFSA nor applied for financial aid.

Do they offer you that once you're accepted? But I suppose the chances are so slim, I probably shouldn't think about it too much. But it would be nice...

On all the admissions information that I read before becoming a student at BMC, they stressed that they did not offer merit aid.

Indeed. And on the financial aid portion of the Bryn Mawr website, they state "All financial aid offered through the Financial Aid Office is based on need." All I can figure is that the small amount of merit aid they offer is not, technically, given through the Financial Aid Office. As I recall, the aid offered my d was called a BMC Trustee Scholarship.

She received the notice in her acceptance "big envelope." I remember being surprised to see it because we assumed there was no merit aid at BMC.

Mattice is correct. My daughter had a similar experience (no application for financial aid) in that she was informed in her admissions package that she had been selected as a Bryn Mawr Trustee's Scholar.

BMC has merit aid, but they are not allowed to publicize it (not sure the reasons, but some students told me this was the case). In addition, Bryn Mawr is one of a number of colleges who participate in the Posse program; they are also not allowed to publicize this.

The Posse Foundation affiliation isn't a secret.
