Merit Aid

Quick question...

If I theoretically don't get any merit aid this year, would it be possible for me to reapply and try to get merit aid for 2008-09?

Bumping this....

Also, another question on a related topic....

Does anyone know if one can leverage merit aid at Wash U? D received a "full ride" at lower ranked large midwestern state university. At Wash U, D was initially deferred ED (probably because of one first quarter C, which she brought up second quarter). Then, last week she received early notification of her acceptance which mentioned that her application stood out as "one of the best they received this year" + invited to fly out (at Wash U's expense) for Art Weekend. She was not offered any merit $ and we do not qualify for financial aid.

Honestly, if I were you I'd call WashU's Office of Financial Aid and ask them upfront your questions and discuss your financial/academic situation.

Yup. WashU will accommodate you to the best of their ability (lowest possible EFC they can calculate) if you ask and you disclose your financial situation and show interest in the school.

Well, the question was about merit aid, and not need-based aid (and I'd like to find out the answer as well...)

no... i think you have to apply to the merit scholarships at washu... which means if you weren't invited this week or next week for interviews then you don't get merit aid. Sorry. (As a side note: I am at washu on merit and I only could get more need-aid. my merit scholarship pays for a predetermined amount listed in the scholarship brochure)

Thanks everyone for your input. nngmm is right....we are only asking about merit aid; never applied for/needed financial aid. Actually, D was considered for, but didn't get, an art-related scholarship award, as she submitted a portfolio. I was kind of thinking along the lines of...what if one or more of those scholarship winners declined to attend Wash U and whether they would possibly reconsider D as, let's say, a runner-up for such a merit award. I know that only Wash U would be able to answer this. I guess what I'd like to get advice on would be the best, least obnoxious way to approach this with Wash U.

ollump,
we are in the same situation ( and my daughter was also invited to the Art weekend, even though she was already committed to attend after ED acceptance, so we were surprised by this invitation...)
So if you think of some non-obnoxious way to approach them, could you let us know ;)?

Sure, no problem. Congrats to your daughter. Btw, what type of art is she interested in? Mine is interested in fashion design, but also likes 3-D stuff. She hopes to double major in psychology. She too, will definitely be attending Wash U (regardless of merit $).

Mine is interested in painting, and is also planning to double-major (either psychology or PNP)

Congrats, ollump & nngmm on your D's admissions. My S is admitted to Architecture and is planning to double major in psych or PNP, too!

Re: merit awards, Wash U offers one full-tuition merit scholarship (4 yrs) in Art and one in Architecture--don't know if your daughters sent in their portfolios for consideration or not, but the WUSTL has invited 6 finalists for each to interviews next week. (My S is going for Arch). One will be selected for the big award and the runners-up get a smaller ($7K I believe) annual merit award. If the top winner doesn't matriculate, I imagine they move to the next runner up, but don't know how this works for sure.

Our S's GCs advise families to submit all the FAFSA and CSS stuff (which is a total pain) even if a family does not seem to qualify because some schools, like WashU, will try to work out some combo of grants/loans/workstudy $$ even for high earning (and high expenses) families.

Not sure if there is still time to do this, but you should definitely call the FinAid office and get their advice no matter what. They are very friendly and what could it hurt?

We did not apply for the need-based aid. I actually called them, and they said that all the finalists confirmed that they are coming, so they will not be contacting the runner-ups... And if any of them decide not to matriculate, the scholarship will not be offered to others... oh,well...

Congrats, and good luck to your son, madbean!

Yes, congrats madbean on your son's scholarship finalist status and admission! Thanks so much to you and nngmm for sharing all that scholarship info. Never hurts to ask about these things. Looks like psychology (and PNP) are popular with the artistic crowd. That's what we love the most about Wash U...that they make it so easy to pursue other interests and majors.

Thank you both. It's a fabulous school. I'll be visiting the campus for the first time next week and I can't wait to look around.
