Merit Aid

I just got a merit scholarship today! I am sooooo beyond excited. Just wondering though, does Rochester ever send students more than one scholarship/ do they send them in waves?

did you have to apply for merit scholarships, or do they just automatically consider you for them based on your application?

rochester accepted me about a week ago, but i haven't heard anything about scholarships yet

you're automatically considered. I was accepted about a week ago too and I just got my scholarship letter today.

You are considered automatically.

There are basically 6 categories of money you could get:

1) Rochester-specific scholarships aka merit-based (e.g., Renaissance, etc)
2) Need-based grants (based on family's need determined from FAFSA)
3) Work-study (also based on need)
4) Federal/state loans based on need (no interest while you're in school)
5) Loans with interest that accumulates throughout the spam of you education
6) Outside scholarships not affiliated with UR

You can only get 1 merit-based, Rochester-specific scholarship. If you get 2, they give you the larger one

You can get need-based help on top of this scholarship depending on your family's income situation (e.g., need-based grants, work-study, and interest-free loans)

You can bring in as many outside scholarship as you want, however, there is a cap that once reached with outside money, they start taking your Rochester-specific money away. (I am not sure what this cap is this year. In 2006, it was $1,500 in outside scholarships. For every dollar over that amount, they would subtract 50 cents of Rochester grant money.)

Hope this helps.

^yes, it does help

when does one get notified about interviews for the renaissance scholarship? I've gotten a scholarship offer from them, but i'm hoping that i'll be a candidate for the renaissance (otherwise, i won't be able to financial go to rochester)

If you've already gotten notification of a merit grant, you're not in the running for Renaissance. I believe that the candidates for Renaissance have already been notified.

^^^
Yes, at least some Ren scholarship finalists were notified with their acceptance letter in the first round. (I don't know about all). The finalist weekends are schedule at the end of March.

Renaissance invitations have already gone out.

Interview weekends are the last two weekends in March and all candidates get at least a 2+ week notice in order to make travel arrangements.

How did they determine Renaissance finalists? I saw someone from last year with about the same stats as me who became a Renaissance finalist, but I didn't get picked at all. I guess it really depends year-to-year. When did the Renaissance people get their letters?

Well, my D was Ren finalist last year and I haven't a clue how the finalists are chosen.

(Of course, as her mom, I think she's a pretty exceptional kid. But that just could be parental pride talking....)

My son was a finalist a few years ago. He had excellent stats but I was still very surprised that he was chosen to interview. I think his selection might have had something to do with the fact that very few students from our state are enrolled in UR. Just a hypothesis though. He was awarded a half tuition scholarship but chose to attend a different school.
