Merit Aid!!

I was accepted to Stonehill with 10,00/year. I really want to go there but need more money to do so. I got more from other schools. Will Stonehill try to match them if I contact their financial aid office?

Hi, when did you hear that you got accepted, I am still waiting. What other schools did you get into?

So glad you got your acceptance. My children also can’t attend with just their merit award, but will you get any other FA, any need-based aid?

i was accepted january 6. and i also got into quinnipiac, wpi, and elizabethtown’s honors program. i will probbably not get any other financial aid which is why i need more merit!

Stonehill14, not to sound like your mom here, but you’ve dominated this board with your fears about getting accepted. And congratulations, you did! But perhaps it’s time to deal with Stonehill’s financial aid office about your plight rather than dominating the boards again here. Just be sensitive to the other kids who a) haven’t gotten into Stonehill yet but desperately want to go there; and b) the kids who have gotten in but haven’t received as much aid as you have so far. Thanks!

sorry. that was not my intention by any means and im sorry if i have offended you or anyone else. i guess im just so anxious that i over-post. good luck to everyone on the college process!

I enjoy reading your posts Stonehill14, keep them coming. I like reading what you have to say, and responding if I ever had a question on this page. Thanks!

do people find out about merit aid with their financial aid thing or the acceptance letter?

chelseac92: merit aid comes with your acceptance but need based aid comes in the financial aid package

Sorry if this a dumb question but… Does Stonehill include a Presidential Scholarship is the financial aid package based on a students efc? Or do they try to meet the efc and the merit scholarship is added on top?

Merit scholarships are not based on need, so the presidential isn’t.

So you would get the package for your efc without any consideration to the Presidential Scholarship? According to Collegeboard, the average is approximately 80% of need.
I was impressed with how nice everyone was as well as the facilities and programs available. It is still difficult to read D, she said she liked it but I cannot get her to rate her options. I suspect she is waiting for financial aid and the last batch of acceptances she has coming. Stonehill is the smallest of her schools but does seem to have alot of the advantages of a larger school. I suspect it is a bit of a trek into Boston despite their proximity.

Debruns- Saint Joe’s has more students and an older more Hogwarts type of campus (gargoyles and such) than Stonehill. Stonehill has much more of a nature feel and is spread out more. The students at Stonehill seemed more New Englandy/Red Sox fans and Saint Joes had more of the Middle Atlantic Penn/NJ students Yankees/Phillies fans and the styles that prevail. (which is to be expected)

Sleepy1, one of my daughters would probably love the gothic feel of St. Joe’s. She liked the “country look” of Stonehill but has allergies, so it was a mixed blessing.
St Joe’s has a decent tour video on their site, but nothing beats being there. We have a decent amount of aid there, more than Stonehill so far, but it’s also more expensive, so not that much more…the math gives me a headache sometimes!
I just saw on collegeboard, a place to put the colleges and aid amounts and they do the simple math for you, a good way to show a child all at once, how the packages look.

One daughter applied to Bryn Mawr also, so we were hoping to see that school and St.Joe’s together.

I regard to your question, I have wondered about that myself. If your EFC is 15,000 and they get 10.000 merit, is your need-based amount now 5,000 if they meet full need? Sometimes I see students get merit and a generous grant, but every college is different. I think most of the time, the merit is with your FA package in reducing your need. It just can’t be taken away if you make more money, like a grant can.
