Merit Aid

my last message was riddled with typos …I’m tired…Friday night! My apologies…

Off to see a movie and grab some dinner…

cross your fingers and toes everyone- maybe starting Monday there will be some new action and some acceptances posted…
Hope so for those of you for whom CMU is your first choice…
if it’s your third choice…well hoping the spot goes to someone who really wants it…and you get a spot at your first choice…

On the topic of “bargaining,” what is the proper way to bargain with them? Would it be beneficial for a student to call the Financial Aid office to show their genuine interest, or should a parent/adult calling in for them to take the call seriously?

As I noted in my post above, you will fill out a form “request for review” …in which you include competing offers. I sincerely think it helps to first contact and speak directly to someone in admissions…follow up with an email and then send in the form. In that phone call /email you express how CMU is your first choice (if it is).

If you can visit campus-- such a gesture goes even further. Schedule a meeting with Admissions to discuss your finaid package-- but it is NOT a standard part of their process.

There is a form, they do respond. It’s not yet online.

Thank you THANK YOU mom2012and14! Your information is thorough and to the point. Wish I would have found your posts sooner! And wish the school guidance department would have shared similar info for us first timer parents!

xcmomof3, you probably already know this but CMU has a merit scholarship called the Carnegie Scholarship for people who qualify for little to no Financial Aid.

According to their Request Review form, “Include copies of the financial aid award or scholarship offers from other private schools which you believe are more competitive than Carnegie Mellon’s offer of financial assistance.”

Anyone having experience with this? Does this mean they would only consider offers from peer institutions listed on the link that was posted?

D was accepted to MCS and it is her first choice…although, none of her comparable offers would be from one of those listed schools.
