I am applying to schools like Clemson, Purdue, NC State, and Ohio State under the priority deadlines, and I was wondering if anyone knew what the merit aid programs were like for any of these schools. It looks like my parents make a lot more money than they really do because my dad is a small business owner. So, I won't qualify for need based aid, but we can't afford to pay a lot out of pocket. What are the chances for getting a free ride to any of these schools, or at least a considerable amount of merit aid, and is there a seperate application I will have to complete or do they just decide based on my college app? I have gotten straight A's all through high school, and have a lot of extracurriculars and awards. I'm not sure if this makes any difference but I'm majoring in Animal Sciences so I guess I could apply directly to the agriculture colleges for these schools if that would help me any. Thank you!!!

All those schools are competitive for their top scholarships. You’ll have to check the web sites of the schools to see if they require a separate application. Any chance you are a NMF? There are many schools with good scholarships for those students. You may also want to consider http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/848226-important-links-automatic-guaranteed-merit-scholarships.html. And I hope you have WVU on your list.

No, if they would’ve counted my scores for my sophomore year I would have had a chance but I didn’t do as well on the PSAT my junior year. WVU is my safety school. Since I’m in state and my grades and test scores are high enough, I know I will get my tuition paid through the promise scholarship program. But I really would like to get out of WV for a while…not that I don’t love it here, I do. And most likely I will come back here after college anyway. But I have been to WVU several times and I wasn’t that impressed. Of course I have only been up there for competitions and those sorts of things, so maybe I will get a better feel of it if I actually do a scheduled campus visit, who knows. Just curious, why WVU? Thanks for your advice, I’m starting to stress out about tests and applications and scolarships and such and the help is much appreciated.

WVU because it’s in-state and would (probably) be cheaper than OOS public schools. For instance, cost to attend WVU in-state is around $16.6K. Cost to attend Purdue OOS is $39.5K.

Almost heaven…West Virginia…Blue ridge mountains, Shenandoah river…Life is old there…older than the trees…

Sorry, couldn’t resist. They play this after WVU football games at Mountaineer field, and the fans stay and sing along. That has to be unique.

I don’t think any of those schools will give you a free ride.

What are your SAT or ACT scores. Those scores will largely determine who will give you a scholarship and for how much.

For instance, if your scores are very high, you might get $16k per year from Purdue. …but Purdue costs about $40k per year for an OOS student.

If you tell use your ACT/SAT scores and your GPA, we can suggest schools that will give you the most money in relation to total cost.

How much will your parents pay each year?
