Merit Award Formula

Does anyone have a rough idea of how Tulane calculates which students receive merit awards and how much? My son was just accepted to Tulane SCEA. He is thrilled because the school is his first choice. Now I'm wondering if it's possible he'll get any size reward. His scores are: ACT: 33 SAT: 2160. Three AP exams: 5 in each. But his GPA is a low B. He's coming from a competitive northeast school that Tulane seems to like and ALL of his classes were in the top track available, whether AP or high honors. Does he have a shot?

The GPA may be a problem, but the ACT, etc. may put you in the ballpark for a $15,000 award. Have you received an admissions letter? Awards are included in the letter.

I don’t know if there’s a specific formula that Tulane uses. If you look up last years admitted students thread, you can get a ballpark figure. I was admitted last year with the $25,000.00 scholarship, and later received the DHS. These were my stats:

ACT: 34
SATII Bio: 790
GPA: 4.92
Rank: 3/419
9 APs

My DD’s Presidential Award information was included in her acceptance letter. Here’s her stats:
34 ACT
2210 SAT
4.0 UW GPA
NMSF

Her acceptance letter was dated October 26th and it seems that Tulane was possibly more liberal with acceptances and scholarships early in the admissions cycle than they are currently. Good luck fondmemories.

thanks for the responses. He hasn’t received a letter yet, just the posting on Gibson that he’s accepted. Your stats are really impressive can I ask your opinion of Tulane academically? I don’t mean just the quality of the teaching but the level of student engagement in the classroom? He was considering another school where students were spending most of the class time texting which turned him off

Thx Midwestpop. I don’t expect him to be a candidate for the Presidential award, for sure! But I do wonder whether he will qualify for any award level. Either way he wants to go to Tulane.

S2 picked Tulane over many higher ranked schools and after one semester does not regret his decision. He has really enjoyed his courses, especially his philosophy course. A great deal of argument and discussion, a rigorous professor, and he felt that his critical thinking greatly improved.

I have similar question and am interested in the amount of time expected between the online acceptance and receiving a letter…

There has typically been 1-2 weeks between the time they post it on Gibson and the time you get the physical letter.

To talk about the merit aid- 33 act, 780mathii 790chem, 95 average = $25k a year.

To talk about the time of mail- I received the mailing 5 days after I got accepted on gibson

Daughter got the letter just after I posted this, Founder’s Award for $20,000 yearly and Honors College. We were very happy. Founder’s says this is top 10% of students. Is this still ball park for applying for DHS or is this out of the running?

Well, typically I would have said the competition for the DHS is such that with the number of Presidential winners applying, plus quite a few Distinguished Scholar winners ($25,000 and $22,000 respectively), that there would be no significant chance that she would be competitive. However, Founders winners never used to be invited to the Honors Program either. Congrats to her on both counts, that is really great. So I guess it is up to her if she wants to invest the time and energy. She might not want to regret never trying, all a matter of personal outlook I guess. However, you do realize the deadline for getting it in is this Wednesday, December 15th? That leaves her very little time to do a project and get the extra recommendation into Tulane.

I agree with your approach, little to lose by trying. Thanks very much.

I only received $7500 for a 2100 and 3.6 GPA, but my friend received $22,000 for a 2160 and 3.6; I doubt there’s a specific formula.

I just got $22,000 for 2240 and 3.6 UW. There’s probably some formula.

fallenchemist: I noticed yesterday you referred tothe students who recieved the $22k-$25K presidential scholarship as distingished scholars. Is that a title you give the upper tier students who received the max amounts? Or is there truly a Distinguished Scholar, and if you so can you please elaborate on who they are?

Thanks you are always a wealth of information.

I know from my experience that my letter stated I was selected as a Distinguished Scholar, so I believe it is the level just below Presidential at $22k.

Also, they had not received my Nov SAT scores at the time I was admitted so it was determined based upon these stats:

GPA: 3.9UW/4.4W
ACT: 32

I think I said Presidential winners and Distinguished Scholars winners, $25,000 and $22,000 respectively. So no, lol, I didn’t come up with those titles. Merit scholarships are as follows, everyone that is accepted for admission is considered for these:

Presidential - $25,000
Distinguished Scholars -$22,000
Founders - $20,000
Academic Achievement - $15,000
and there is another for $7,500 but I forget what it is called.

Of course the DHS is full tuition, but that is not one that they consider you for simply because you applied for admission. It requires an additional application.

OH OK now I get it. Good to know. Thanks Again, Fallenchemist you are a wealth of information…

I have the same stats as your son and I wasn’t offered any money…I submitted the DHS app though and I’m going to keep pushing! I’ve got a $30,000/year (plus a free iPad) offer on the table from another school, but I’d much rather go to Tulane.
