I was wondering what range of merit awards have been offered at Mulenberg. My D was chosen as a Dana Scholar (4K) and offered an additional 10K in a merit scholarship. She really likes Mulenberg, and since she chosen as a Dana Scholar it would seem that Mulenberg really likes her, but the merit money is less than she has been offered from other schools. Unfortunately, money will be a significant factor in her decision where to attend.

Is this a typical Mulenberg merit award?

I am interested in knowing how they choose the Dana Scholars. My S has a unweighted 3.75 GPA, top 4% of class, all honors or AP courses, high 600 SAT scores, various number of extracurricular activities, Presidentail officership in two clubs and many hours of volunteer work. He was surprised and greatly disappointed that he was not offered any honors program, BUT he was given a $5,000 merit scholarship. Doesn't the Dana Scholarship come with an additional amount of scholarship money? Congrats on the scholarship anyway!!! I know how important the financial offering is in the final decision. Did you think of appealing?

So sorry. I just reread your comment. I see that you D received (14K) all together WITH the Dana. I definitely would appeal since they obviously are VERY interested. I understand that Muhlenberg is very responsive to appeals.

I believe the top merit award they give is capped at $19,000/year. It says it on their web site in the financial aid section.

D rec'd : 4,000 Dana
10,500 Presidential
3,000 Art
1,500 Theatre

I think the amount of the last three awards was made to add up to the $19,000 max.

I was actually surprised at the amount of money they awarded me. I got some sort of academic achievement scholarship thing for $8,500. I wasn't expecting that much, because I'm pretty sure I only have a 3.4 GPA. (Maybe my SAT and ACT scores helped?)

ChellyBelly I see that you are from Boston. Why did you choose Muhlenberg over all the BFA programs in Boston. I saw your name on the MT board also. Since you are from Boston, what do you know bout Emerson. My S is deciding between Emerson and Muhlenberg. Thank you for your insight.

Lady Mac - there are very few slots available between the three honors programs (Scholars, Dana and RJ Fellows). I think each program accepts around 15 freshman per year. Consider the number of applicants Muhlenberg receives now to yield a class of 550 + or - a few. It's a very competitive field. It's less than 10% of incoming freshman.

While I'm not sure about an 'appeal' process, I do know that they were very accommodating when I pointed out an error in their calucation of aid for my daughter. Since Muhlenberg is an ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) school, it grants certain aid to children of pastors in the ELCA (I can't remember how much). Anyway, at one point I asked about the aid because I expect to be rostered in the ELCA during my daughter's time at Muhlenberg (but not as an ordained pastor). Whoever I asked must have put something in her file, because when the final FA package came, it reflected an amount for ordained pastor's child. I corrected them on it, and they made up the difference by adding the difference to her Presidential Scholarship amount. They did what they could so she'd reach the capped out amount of $18,000 (which is what it was when she entered her freshman year)/year.

i am a graduating senior at muhlenberg. i received a $13,500 merit scholarship when i was first accepted (presidential scholarship). over the years i've accumulated a few other scholarships offered to students once they've completed their first year. this year, i have a total of $22,000 in scholarships, including the original $13,500. these are not the type of scholarships you can apply for. in fact, they awarded them without my knowledge; they just showed up on my semester invoice.

as far as i know, the highest presidential scholarship i've heard of is $15,000.

ps - i initially chose muhlenberg for the money since BC and lehigh both gave me under $5000. i couldn't be happier with my decision. don't underestimate the benefits of a small school and a liberal arts education

Lady Mac, part of it is that I was rejected from all the BFA programs I applied to. The other part is that I really want a solid education, which I felt was something Muhlenberg could and would give me, but that I definitely wouldn't get with a school like BoCo or Emerson.

As for Emerson, I really didn't like the general atmosphere of the school. (Part of it is the huge number of students who hang out in front of one of the dorms and chain smoke.) However, I have a friend who is in the BFA acting program who LOVES it there. I'd definitely recommend visiting both schools to make a decision. Best of luck. (:
