Merit based or Essay scholarships

I need to fill the gap of 20k /year for my daughter as she wanted to go to a private school. How can we fill this gap as we don’t qualify for gift money and at the same time have no savings.Highly frustrated as cannot afford Austin College at Sherman.
Please provide some good links for the scholarships in TX.
Thanks.

So you need $80k?!

Did she apply to ANY financial safety schools?

That’s a big gap, start here:

maybe too late for most though

If you can’t afford to pay the gap then it sounds like this college is too expensive for your family.

Yes, it is too expensive as I don’t qualify for any need based scholarships or financial aids.

Madison 85-What do you mean by financial safety school? She did receive merit based scholarship at UTD .

Then it sounds like she needs to go to UT Dallas.

You’re not going to even come close to finding $20k per year for your DD. You’d be LUCKY at this point to find $1000 and that would only be for only freshman year. After freshman year, the well really dries up. It’s extremely difficult to find outside scholarships for soph, jr, and sr years.

You’re going to have to tell your DD that this school isn’t affordable if you can’t pay the bill.

what is your DD’s stats and career goal?

How is Austin College Sherman? My child received almost full at UTD and presidential scholarship at Austin College.
Cost of education at Austin College is 50k or more this year and we received close to 30k. My child id going to be a premed and I don’t want a loan on him with 80k already. My child is a great kid
Any advise.

Oh good heavens. A premed student shouldn’t have any debt. Your child has almost a free ride to UTDallas? THEN GO THERE!

Is your child a NMF? What is his/her stats? (in another post you mention daughter, in this one you say “him”)

Daughter is going to be a premed with Biology major. She has been selected to Collegium V program at UTD. My only concern is that she will be lost in a big university and it will be very difficult for her to get all opportunities with all competitors though she holds great scores too. Is there any way to get more money from Austin College as she wanted to go to a small university.Money is the only barrier for Austin College.
ssnyder1- Will call you tomorrow, thanks.

UTDallas is very Health and STEM oriented. If your DD is a strong student, she won’t have trouble finding opportunities there. CERTAINLY NOT worth $80k to hopefully have more opportunities at Austin. That Austin employee that’s asking you to call is going to try to sell you on the school, and likely try to convince you to BORROW the money. That person made no mention of giving more money…

You don’t need to worry if your DD has been accepted to Collegium V. Those classes are small and the students have a lot of interaction with their profs. Your DD will not “get lost” at UTD if she’s in that program.

"The University of Texas at Dallas commitment to excellence in teaching and research extends to every aspect of academic life in the university. The Collegium V Honors Program (col·le·gi·um five) provides a four-year honors experience that encourages intellectually creative, inquisitive, and highly motivated students to extend their educational experience beyond the scope of the traditional undergraduate curriculum. Small classes, innovative instruction, world class faculty, bright and inquisitive colleagues, and an array of extracurricular events offer Collegium V members special opportunities for professional and personal growth at the university.
The Collegium V Honors Program uses three pillars to support the program philosophy in a student’s academic life.
Collegium V honors classes encourage student participation through high quality instruction and small class size.
Collegium V facilitates mentoring relationships between faculty and students, providing career counseling and excellent letters of reference.

The Collegium V lounge and classroom space celebrates academic inquiry and intellectual discipline through planned and spontaneous collaboration.

Through these program components, Collegium V students engage in frequent intellectual discussions with professors, mentors and peers that compliment the broad range of academic and student life experiences that characterize a UT Dallas undergraduate education.

Collegium V class enrollments are capped at 20-25 students. Faculty are encouraged to explore innovative ways of delivering material to students in the classroom. Faculty members teaching Collegium V classes are among the top teachers and researchers on campus in their field.

Collegium V regularly offers a wide range of courses in the core curriculum in chemistry, physics, engineering, government, history, humanities, arts and performance, psychology, sociology, rhetoric, and computer science. Specialized upper-level classes have also been offered in electrical engineering, computer science, geoscience, cognitive science, ethics, law, literary studies, and history."

To tell you the truth…UTD is likely a BETTER choice than Austin College. I have a child in med school.

Thanks

To mom2collegekids,
Did your child go to UTD or some other school?
Thanks for sharing all information.

At least one son went to Alabama (and is now in Med School). I can’t remember the other’s school.

both of my kids went to Alabama. My younger son is the one in med school.

Has your DD visited UTDallas? Did y’all meet with the Collegium folks there to see how it’s like a “small school within a big school”?
