Are there any colleges offering merit-based grants to international students?

If yes, what are the criteria? I have a perfect GPA (10 on a scale of 1 to 10, unweighted - grades are not weighted in my country because all the students take the same extremely difficult courses) and my SAT scores are probably quite huge ( 2310 SAT 1 and three 800 and one 770 on the SAT 2) so I would probably qualify for any merit-based grant but the educational systems are different so I wonder if there are any merit- based programs for us internationals.

You’re a day late for a good number of scholarships…many had Dec 1st deadlines for apps.

I didn’t look for them because I was half sure there were no such grants. And how can the deadline be different? Do they not award merit-based grants on the basis of my grades and test scores, all of which I will send along with my application?

Observation: I would have already sent many application to colleges, had an embargo not be placed on the European Postal Services. I now have to wait until the 9th of December to be able to send my application to the USA.

There’s an embargo on European postal services? When did this happen? I just got mail from family in Europe yesterday.

It will really depend on the individual schools. many of the most competitive schools do not offer merit based scholarships to anyone at all, only need based financial aid. Some of these offer need based aid to both international and US students. Many schools do not offer merit or financial aid to International students. other schools offer both. So, it depends on which schools you have applied to.

Many of the apps can be done online.

and, why were you “half sure”?

Many schools have scholarship deadlines that are earlier than final application deadlines.

1) Because some scholarships are competitive and they want time to look over the apps to determine who gets the awards.

2) To prevent too may apps to consider.

3) Perhaps to determine genuine interest because of early application.

Anyway…many had Dec 1st deadlines for big scholarships (which it sounds like you wanted).

Some lower tier schools are probably still accepting apps for scholarship consideration.

to swimcatsmom: The embargo is for packages weighing more than 450 grams. But the private shipping firms still work, if you are a billionaire it’s no big deal. P

to mom2collegekids: I was half sure because I have dozens of friends who study in the US and they never mentioned I should apply for any type of merit-based. Moreover, I have just checked with almost all of the colleges on my list and none of them offers merit-based for international students. Some offer athletic scholarships but that’s all so I didn’t miss anything by not checking earlier.

oh - interesting - is that just in certain countries? I had not heard anything about it from my family in the UK. (& My mail was from the UK and probably did not weight more than 450 grams).

???

Uh…you didn’t miss anything for THOSE schools by not checking earlier, but NOW you say on your other thread that you’re looking for safeties. For a good number of safeties, you missed the deadline.

However, there probably are some lower ranked schools that would give you money.

What is your major?
