Besides UCF for NMF, do any FL schools offer full guaranteed merit scholarships to top OOS kids??

From what I've been able to ascertain, FL schools are so big already and can barely keep up with their in-state kids and Bright Futures, there's not a lot to offer OOS kids.

My D would LOVE to go to UCF, and work at Disney World as a cast member/performer, then teach after college. She has pretty good stats now as a sophomore, and she's working to improve them before her senior year:

4.0 unweighted GPA, honors/gifted core classes, will have 6 AP classes upon graduation, ACT-=26 -- taken once in freshman year with no prep..definitely taking again, PSAT=192 in freshman year w/no prep (210 is our state's cutoff this year, so if she works she could get this)

ECs: 4 years symphonic band, 4 years dance team, 4 years theatre (in addition to local community productions), Beta club, National Honor society, etc. Has one leadership role this year (Beta Tresurer) will take on more in next two years.

I've told her the future's in her hands and she has to prep for the PSAT & SAT...NMF is best bet I'm thinking.

Also been reading mom2collegekids posts about alabama...it's looking pretty good right now. Alabama will give her more as an OSS kid then LSU would coming in-state... She wants to leave LA anyway!!

Is your D a junior this year? If so, have her practice for the PSAT next month. :)

Does she have the Collegeboard SAT practice book? If not get it from the bookstore. She can use that to prepare for the PSAT.

And…if for some odd reason she is sick the day of the PSAT, immediately have your GC call NMCorp. They will let her use a SAT score. She can take that SAT on a set date…(probably in Nov or Dec).

She’s only a sophomore this year, but I did get her the Collegeboard SAT practice book, along with an answer book, and another one overall strategy book.

That’s good to know about her being sick on test day…

Thanks for sharing all your tips!!

My son is a senior theater major at Rollins College, a top liberal arts college in the southeast, and one that is in Winter Park, which is a suburb of Orlando. Rollins also has one of the most beautiful campuses in the country, and is the oldest college in Florida.

It has wonderful merit aid for top students:

"Cornell Scholars Program

* Up to 10 full tuition scholarships per year.
- Semi-finalists typically have SATs of 1420 or higher (Critical Reading and Math) or ACTs of 32 or higher (Composite) and GPAs of 3.7 or higher.
- Annually renewable with a 3.6 GPA and completion of 24 credit hours each year.
- For more information, please visit Cornell Scholars Program."

There also is excellent merit aid for top entering prospective theater majors, though I don’t see that info on the Rollins site.

The theater department is excellent.

S has gotten a better education than I got at Harvard. His idea of a large class is one with 12 students!

If you have questions feel free to PM me.

Link to info about Rollins’ Theater Dept:

Northstarmom…

WOW!! I had been looking at Rollins but thought it was too cost prohibitive! I was thinking the competition would be too much for the Cornell scholarship…but I guess we shouldn’t scratch it off the list just yet!

Just from what I’ve seen online – I know it’s not the same as visiting – I would love for her to go there. Smaller in size than the big mega colleges in Fl and seems more flexible.

My D would love the flexibility because she originally wanted to teach high school theatre…(She LOVES theatre and has been involved in local community/school productions since she was 10.) but also LOVES math and excels in it (as a sophomore she’s taking pre-calculus and will graduate with 6 math credits, including 2 APs Calculus AB and BC.) So she thought she would get a degree to teach high school math which is more of a sure thing than teaching theatre… but thought she might be able to sponsor a drama club or something…

I wonder if they would work with her so she could major in math ed and minor in theatre… she would love that!! I already checked with FL’s DOE on requirements for theatre certification and she would only need a minor of 30 hours and to pass a theatre subject test…Then she could be certified for both math and theatre…what a combination!

I will definitely PM you later to get more info…Have to run to doctor’s appointment now…

Thank you so much!!!

There are other merit scholarships as well…Presidential and Alonzo Rollins scholarships are based on I believe above 1300 SAT which give around $5000 to $10,000 a year. You will be automatically reviewed for those scholarships. Rollins does have very good aid because they want to attract top students. I think the money they have put into attracting quality applicants has raised the standards since the past reputation was marred by the rich party applicants. Definitely it is a school you should consider. My S loves it there and the merit aid was a boost.

I forgot to add that my son is minoring in math. He has had top notch math professors and found them to be quite easy to talk with for help or just for fun.

NorthStarmom and SweetTea…

Thanks for the awesome info. I’ve spent the last hour or so perusing the Rollins catalog. It seems really great…

Thanks again for the tip. I still have a few years to go, but wanted to get started early since my D wants to go OOS and there’s so much to learn and compare!

I graduated from UCF this year!!! LOVED UCF! I am now going to New York University of my graduate degree now. I think your daughter has a good chance to get in… make sure she writes a really great application!! A lot of students work at disney (esp. the students majoring in Hospitality and Hotel Management). UCF is seriously an amazing school and the surrounding area is great!!! I wish your daughter the best of luck with her application. GO KNIGHTS!!!
