Merit money at CofC

As I get closer to choosing a college, I have been told by many people to put College of Charleston on my radar for their excellent honors college. I managed to bump my ACT up from a 28 to a 30, and changed my mind about what I want to major in. I am now interested in business. This school looks very nice, but 45K or so for OOS is too expensive. I cannot find a thread about stats and merit scholarships at this school, so any accepted students who could share their merit package and act scores/gpa would be great.

My son will be attending CofC Honors College as a William Aiken Fellow in the Fall. I’ve enclosed a link with the stats of accepted students for the Class of 2019 so you can see what you’d need to be competitive for for acceptance into the Honors College. There is no merit guaranteed with acceptance to the Honors College, and the highest merit is usually given to the highest stats applicants. My son was ranked in the top 1% of his class, GPA 4.95 , 32 ACT , Eagle Scout, lots of ECs and volunteer hours. I hope this helps.

I appreciate the response. Did your son receive any merit aid? And I was more so interested in people’s stats and what aid they received, not the median score to get into the honors college.

My son did receive substantial aid but he has high stats and is an instate student. CofC is a public institution and merit funds are limited. The reason why I sent you the median score to get into the Honors College is in order to receive merit aid , typically one’s stats need to be quite a bit higher. The higher merit awards were typically awarded to students who were invited to the William Aiken Fellows interview weekend. If your stats are not competitive to be invited to attend interview weekend, the likelihood of substantial merit is decreased. Based on the stats that you provided , an invitation to attend is questionable . The avg ACT score was 33 with an avg GPA of 4.79.

OOS daughter had a 31 ACT and 3.95 UW GPA and was accepted to honors, scholarship for in state tuition plus 500/yr. She did not get invited to interview for Aiken.

NCdad1 - Do you know if 31 is the minimum required score for that in state scholarship, or is a 30 possible for it as well?

There are no set parameters for scholarships at CofC. The only way to know what merit you will be offered is to apply and see what you are offered. CofC is not like Alabama where if you have a certain GPA and test scores you automatically receive a set amount of money. You may also want to look and see what departmental scholarships you can apply for to bring down the cost of attendance .
