Merit Scholarship?(+another question)

Hey people. This is my first thread on this website......wish I could've found out sooner about here.

Anyways, I was wondering this: Does it affect your chances at all if you check a "yes" for Merit Scholarships?

I mean, if it doesn't, wouldn't it make sense for everyone to apply for Merit scholarships?

ARGH, just a few days left(i'm doin EA) and I'm still unsure about my essays. Seriously, is it safe to show some ppl here my essays and ask for advice? (ok this feels like a dumb question but oh well)

Shoot. Another question:

I have four recommendation letters: from Econ, Eng, Physics, and a family friend/advisor(a religious figure)

do you think it's ok to send two supplementary recs? (ah i'd hate to ask the econ or eng teacher not to send theirs though)

I believe merit aid decisions are separate from admissions decisions, so I doubt it would affect one's chances. My S sent in two additional recommendations (one wasn't even in English, though a translation was provided).

No, it has no real affect.
