Merit Scholarship Availability?

I'm instate and understand the the economic crunch at UW...
But, are any merit scholarships offered at all?

I called and received conflicting information. One person told me no. The other told me merit scholarships only went to Honors applicants. I was not planning to apply to Honors as I will be entering with a substantial amount of college credits.

Does anybody know the real story?

I’ll bump just once…
Anybody??

There are actually quite a few available, from what I can see after a bit of quick Googling.

This one is for science/tech/engineering/math:
[Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium](http://www.waspacegrant.org/UWschol.html)

This is a general merit scholarship page for freshman, with links to departments:
[Student Office of Financial Aid](<a href=“Student Financial Aid”>Student Financial Aid)

UW also offers a list of freshman merit scholarships that can be from third-party sources
[Scholarships - Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships and Awards](http://www.washington.edu/students/ugrad/scholar/scholarships/incoming_students)

Does the amount of financial given to students depend more on family income or academic stats?

Again, from what I’ve been reading over the past few months:

First of all, the amount of straight-up FA the college dishes out (various grants, work-study, etc) is dependent entirely upon economic standing.

From there, you can also receive scholarships that consider your academics. They’re all academically based, but some of them also “consider” financial need, though you’ll need to have the academic qualifications first and foremost. Others are also specialized, in terms of race, gender, intended major, employer, residency, or some combination of the above. Also, like HoopHoop mentioned, some are only for Honors students.

UW, like most top tier state schools, has been very stingy with merit scholarships.

I see. Thanks for the info.

I got a 4 year merit scholarship for the first one I applied for. However I am a transfer student, so I haven’t looked into what’s available for incoming freshman specifically.

Chesers has the right idea with the links they posted
