Merit Scholarship Criteria

We would like to know what the potential for merit money might be. If you received a merit award, would you mind letting us know your stats (GPA, SAT, ACT) and what your award was as an incoming freshman? Were you in-state or out-of-State? Thank you!

There may be other ways, but we tested it out on Chapman’s Netprice Calculator. It asks for your gpa and ACT/SAT scores. Results include your specific merit award for those stats. You can run it several times to determine what you’ll earn if you bump your scores up a bit. Chapman is nicely transparent about how they grant merit aid and they seem to follow their guidelines very closely. Our son’s scholarship, when he was accepted in Jan, mirrored it exactly.

Note that the NPC uses unweighted gpa (not weighted) for determining merit. It makes a BIG difference if you have a wide spread between W/UW, so be sure to enter the correct one.

Good luck! :)

My S received his acceptance letter today with a Presidential Scholarship of $25K. Renewable for 4-years.

Yay!

Thanks, gladiatorbird! That was cool to play with! Hopefully it will also mean good news for the future. D is a junior–it’s been great reading about your son and all the others this past month–and we will be on that roller coaster next year. :-)

To get an idea of the amount being awarded to some of the students, you can go through the “Official Early Action Decision Reporting Thread - Class of 2016”
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/chapman-university/1274070-official-early-action-decision-reporting-thread-class-2016-a.html

Also, as gladiatorbird had said, you can use their Net Cost Calculator to get an estimate of the potential merit aid. Keep in mind that it is used as an estimator only.

I’m an international student and I was offered a Dean’s Scholarship of $15k and a Delfin Scholarship of $12k, so $27k in total. I was really surprised (and of course happy) about Chapman’s generosity, considering how my stats are nowhere near stellar:

Major: English/Economics
GPA: 3.45 UW (Full IB Diploma, predicted score: 36-38/45)
SAT: 1750
ECs: very focused on publishing and writing (magazine, newspaper, journalism congress) and also tennis

I recently met with a Chapman representative and she said that I wouldn’t have gotten a great scholarship if I hadn’t been a full IB Diploma candidate and had a ‘third country’ experience (because I consider myself as part of three different cultures).

I hope this offers a slightly different perspective from the comments so far. :)

My D was accepted at Chapman
Rec’d Presidential Scholarship - $25K
UW - 4.00 W: 4.48
SAT - 2220
8 APs + honors Calculus
Good ECs (president of 3 clubs) + Girl State Rep+ Girl Scout Gold Award.
No sports - Her passion is acting though and has been involved with hs and community theater for 4 years.

She’s applied to Stanford (haven’t heard yet) and Occidental which is her first choice and we are really hoping for some merit award there. If not the Chapman offer looks very generous and we are very appreciative!

Dean’s Scholarship of $15k (Renewable 4-years)
GPA:
UW-3.67
W-4.21
SAT combo-1640 550CR 550M 540W
4 AP’s+rest Honors classes
Have some great EC’s with volunteer hours and pageant title!
In-state-CA

So happy :)

Correction. S has 6 APs, not 3.

For consideration for merit scholarship, did u need to apply for financial aid, or were you awarded merit scholarship without applying for scholarship. It just based on the strength of you admissions application

Yohoyoho: You do not need to apply separately for Merit aid from Chapman (or most other colleges). They consider it with the application. My daughter also rec’d a generous scholarship from Occidental which is where she most likely will go. However for financial aid you must fill out the FAFSA financial aid application. [Home - FAFSA on the Web-Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/)

Schools will tell you how to do the financial aid. We don’t qualify for any financial aid as we are in the ‘middle-class’ area where we make too much for financial aid yet aren’t nearly well-off enough to swallow a $50K+ college bill a year.

We had our fingers crossed for merit awards and our D followed through on her end of the bargain by maintaining straight A’s through-out high school. We also sought out schools that offer generous merit aid - Chapman and Occidental being two of those. It is mainly why we decided against the Claremont schools as they have very limited merit aid.
My D has also applied to Stanford which we will hear from next week. No idea if she will get in because as everyone knows it’s a complete crapshoot even for 4.0UW students, but even if she does we will be torn because they offer very little merit aid there.

She would love either Occidental or Chapman with Occidental being her #1 choice. This has been a very happy week for her as all her hard work has paid off. She also rec’d the Regent’s award to UCSB which is also a very generous scholarship ($6K a year plus several perks like early registration). We didn’t even know the UC’s had something like that until she rec’d the envelope in the mail!
