Merit scholarship or cannot attend Lehigh

I’m a new member, so please bear with me. I’m a parent of 2 sons. First son was accepted into Lehigh engineering but with only 3K in in financial aid grant, he decided to attend in-state UMD-College Park instead of going 200K in debt. I’ve told my second son (now a HS junior) that the only way for him to attend Lehigh is if he gets a Merit scholarship, because financial aid formulas somehow think we have enough income to go 200K in debt to pay for him to attend Lehigh. What is Lehigh most looking for in merit scholarships? He is in the top 1% of his class, takes tons of AP classes, involved in lots of band activities, but I know that almost everyone at Lehigh is also outstanding. Thanks in advance for any insight in what it takes to get a Lehigh merit scholarship.

Lehigh gives quarter, half, and full tuition merit awards. It’s a holistic review, but test scores north of 32 and geography, major area, diversity, and other institutional interests would come in to play.

My son recieved a quarter merit scholarship and he fit the criteria you described. Very helpful post!!

My daughter received a half tuition scholarship to Lehigh. She graduated HS #1, had a 2250 SAT, 34 ACT. We are from the tri-state area, visited the school twice, and attended two local Lehigh events where she was told she earned “brownie points” for coming. Honestly, I think it was her essays and demonstrated interest that earned her the merit.
