Merit Scholarship Questions

According to the admissions’ Twitter account, (though it was a while ago) merit scholarship decisions will be released by March 1, with this deadline approaching I’ve been thinking about it. If money is received, will there be an email about it, like the admission letter, or will it come through the mail? Also, I made it into the Honors College, though missed out on Banneker/Key, so I’ve been hopeful/expecting the President’s Scholarship, does anyone know how selective it is or how much I would be likely to get?

Notification is by snail mail. Admission to Honors/Scholars/FIRE (or other LLPs) or a LEP is not an indicator of merit money. There are some things that have changed with admission this year, so what was previously unpredictable, is even less so now. I can only tell you that in the past, it seemed that merit money was casually related more to standardized test scores than to gpa, but of course, that was only an opinion, and not based on any fact.

@SoofDad did a great summary of scholarships here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/1959344-scholarship-facts.html#latest

@678triple98212 My son is in almost the same position, admitted to Honors but not invited to Banneker/Key. So we are also waiting on merit notification.

I love UMD as I have an older son already there, but all their websites listing different merit notification dates are almost comical.

First, their twitter page says notification electronically by March 1.

Then their admitted students FAQ https://admissions.umd.edu/explore/freshmandecisionfaqs.php has it answered twice in the same document, once March 1, once April 1.

And then their merit scholarships page says mid March. https://www.admissions.umd.edu/finance/freshmanscholarships.php

So I imagine one of these dates will be correct. Good luck.

My son was admitted in the Honors Program but wasn’t invited in UMD Banneker/Key.

Today, he received in the mail his President’s Scholarship from UMD. The letter was dated Feb 20, 2017. So happy for my son. Thanks!!!

Congratulations @gmc0508

Thank you @SoofDad! This came as a surprise, a very good surprise. He got $32k and we’re in-state, so this is really a big help! Thanks again!

My son got $20k, OOS. This probably tips the scales for us…expect him to be a terp in the fall!

Hi, can you see the financial award package when you log in to the portal? thanks

Congrats @gmc0508 and @Quantify! DD was also admitted to Honors and was hoping for a BK invite, but that didn’t happen. With SAT = 1560/1600, ACT = 35, and GPA = 4.65 (W), it’s not unreasonable to expect she’d get SOMETHING. So now the obsessive checking of the mail can begin … we were 10 days behind most people here on CC in receiving her offer of admission in the mail even though it showed on the portal on the first day they were posted. So now I’m guessing we’ll be wondering for the next week or so – is it just not here yet, or did she not get anything?

DD received the letter in the mail today offering the President’s Scholarship. $32k. In-state. Very happy!

^^Those values are total, not per year, correct?

Curious as to ACT/SAT/GPA stats of those who were offered scholarships.

@joechriscat, haven’t checked the portal but my son received the notice via snail mail.
@ailinsh1 hang in there, like you said sometimes mails do come in slow.
@WhereIsMyKindle yes it’s total for 4 years accdg to the letter. My son received $32k and we are in-state.
@EngineeringDad7777 below is my son’s stats

*NMF 222/228
*old SAT 2280/2400 (800 Math, 700 Reading, 780 writing)
*SAT II Math (800) and Physics (710)
*ACT is 35 (all 35s except Math and Science were 36)
*11 APs by end of 12th grade (so far all 5s in AP except in one with a score of 4)
*Rank 1 or 2 of class of 300+
*GPA is 4.0 unweighted

Hope this helps. Congrats to all who also received scholarship and good luck to those who are still waiting.

Snail mail came today.

President’s scholarship
In state engineering
5K for 4 years = 20K total

DS would have attended UMD even without merit scholarship but this makes the decision easy.
Good luck to everyone.

So apparently the mail worked better this time … snail mail came today. Woot! And she’s spending the night on campus tonight with FLEXUS so the timing is good…

$8k for 4 years = $32k total
In-state

ACT = 35
SAT (new) = 1560/1600
GPA = 4.0 UW/4.65 W

DD scored 1580 on new SAT. 4.71 weighted GPA. Engineering.

Congrats @ailinsh1 and @Engineering713!

Got a letter today got president 48k over 4 year, OOS. But I have rutgers full ride, so probably will not go to college park. Plus don’t like the college park program chosen?

Letter today. Out of state Illinois . Chemical engineering, 35 ACT. Presidential scholarship for 12,000 a year. Disappointed no BK chance but grateful for this amount

If you’ve received the letter can you say whether there is anywhere online that this information is available? Nothing in today’s mail but sons stats are comparable to those posted so far… Keeping fingers crossed. He really loves UMD.
