Merit scholarship [REJECTS] support group

Okay so I'm bummed about not getting a scholarship but only 3 percent did so....yea.....I understand.
Anyway, I still have hope. I love USC so much ..I really want to get in!!!
I have to wait alllllllllllllllllllllll the way until April. God why?
But anyway I think this group would be nice...we didn't get the scholarship but we can encourage each other.
I didn't have the "stats" at all....but I was really banking on the holistically. I'm starting to feel I was too modest with the ECs
But no way to turn back now.
Just look forward

At this time I would like to quote a wise one when this situation happens:
"just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming swimming swimming...what do we do ? We swim swim swim"
:-)

Also you know your a reject cause you got the email saying you were wonderful so don’t give up hope.

I am extremely bummed out because I’ve been so anxious these past few days and I was holding to a very small sliver of hope.

Seeing everybody’s stats frightens me. I have a very solid unweighted GPA with what I thought was a rigorous workload (I say this because I see people with 8 APs and passing all of them with a 5, that makes me 5 APs look petty). I’m not the greatest test taker and didn’t get that high of an SAT score. I have some extra curriculars that reflect my dedication, but I am not a humanitarian that has fed 1000 kids in Africa or found a cure to cancer. Seeing these extremely qualified people scares me. I mean I knew USC was going to be extremely competitive, but I never imagined it would be this competitive.

USC is my dream school. If I don’t get accepted within the next few months, I’ll be devastated.

Also in the same boat! I knew I didn’t have the stats and I’m fine with not getting one. I am just worried about the SCA acceptances that went out and if those had anything to do with the scholarships or not…I am just wishing to get into SCA, above all. Hopefully there will still be SCA admits for the April 1st decisions.

Dont quite know what they wanted… 2300 SAT, 35 ACT, 3 760+ SAT IIs, President of School Campus Ministry and Altar Servers, teach religion classes on the weekend, Jamaican Mission trip, started a service organization thats started 31 libraries in hospitals in 4 states (3200 childrens books), NMCS, state champion quizbowl, impeccable recs, this one is a head-scratcher for me.

AdoddProductions,
What program did you apply to?

I applied to Film and TV production.

@tptptb What was your gpa?

4.0 UW, 4.61 W (highest ever at my school, large private). Im secretary of my class and VP of Key Club too

tpt
It must have been something else. Maybe your essay?
Because you sound rather exceptional to me! What other schools are you applying to? Are you Jamaican??=)

I didn’t have the stats at all. lol. Like I had a 1840 super score. And basically BOMBED all the Subject Tests. I go to a small boarding school in NY. I know my recs were great cause they loved me. But I feel I was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too modest on the application. But I am definitely applying for those other scholarships. Hopefully those will be my doors in.

I had a recommendation from a USC alumni as well. She was my mentor and advocated HARD for me. I have this other thing coming up too with an influential USC grad in politics. If I get denied, I will definitely appeal with a recommendation from him.

But honestly it was only 3 percent people. They said they were at the tippy top of the list.

Wait can someone explain this SCA dilemma…Like I dont understand. WAs this your only chance at acceptance with SCA?

I wasn’t expecting anything (well, maybe a miracle) with my stats but it was still disappointing to receive that email. :frowning: If it helps though, two months ago we were sending our applications, and for me at least, they went by very fast. So hopefully these two months will be fast as well! Good luck everybody! Keep your hopes up! :)

Yeah I don’t get it.
I’m 4.0, 4.78, highest in my class. 2350, 800 Math II, 770 US History.
5 5’s, 1 4.
All- State Jazz Trumpet
Assistant Drum Major
Pres. of Tri-M
Officer of NHS
Eagle Scout- led project to build a bridge in a park.
(white male i guess hurts sometimes)
It’s really not practical for me to attend USC without a decent scholarship (from MD)
I guess it was cause I was glad that Georgia Tech beat them in the Sun Bowl :P

If you look at the thread with the stats of who got scholarships they are all over the place in terms of grades, test scores, and even activities. Some did some really impressive things, but others didn’t do anything more impressive than what I have read on this thread or what my own daughter did. I don’t really think there is a specific formula. I think each admissions officer just picked applicants who spoke to them in some inexplicable wayl

My daughter is trying to get into SCA too. We know someone who is a junior now who didn’t hear until the last day of March so don’t worry that SCA students need to be chosen in January because that is not true!

Yea. Maybe they did speak to them. Smother your right! =)

And I don’t think the stats were all over the place. They seemed to be all above 2000…everyone did very well.

Keep hope people. Keep hope.

Is anyone else applying for other Merit scholarships? I actually need a scholarship. Even if USC is generous(thats one of the things I love about them) Because books, transportation, and everything else is not free! We are considered low income so i will definitely look into that.

AdoddProduction,

Care to share your visual sample?

As for my stats, I don’t have a great SAT score: 1870. My unweighted GPA is a 3.87 and my weighted GPA is about 4.4. By the end of this year I will have taken 5 AP classes, but I’ll have taken 6 AP exams. I am a dedicated person to the theatre program at my school having participated in 9 productions. I’ve been an ensemble member, supporting role, lead, stage manager and sound designer/operator. I am the president of the Spanish Honors Society, a group I’ve been apart of since my sophomore year, and a group I went to Spain with for World Youth Day. With the Spanish Honors Society I help make lunches for those in skid row every other week and tutor students at my school. This year I am the student body secretary. For two years, I have been apart of the TV studio at my school, being titled Most Promising Director, and served the positions of graphic designer, technical director, show director, and anchor. I am also in the top 5% of my class.

I am really hoping this will be enough to get accepted.

I wish you guys were around last year. :p

Yeah, waking up to that email wasn’t the most fun thing to do this morning! I guess I just had too high of hopes. Stats-wise, I got a 35 ACT, 2190 SAT, NMSF, AP Scholar w/ Distinction, and I’ve been on the Varsity swim team since freshman year (State team soph. year and above), along with being a Special Olympics Assistant Coach and racking up 80+ volunteer hours doing that. Oh well, USC is still my first choice! I’m just banking on a Presidential scholarship. And getting in. Hopefully. Ahhhhhhhhhhh

Wait, so if I didn’t get that email saying that I was not considered for scholarship, what does that mean? :-</p>

I totally misunderstood what was coming out this round. I thought it was all the merit awards whether it was $500, $5k or a full ride. I didn’t know it was this very small % and just the highest awards. Since it is 2013 and technology is what it is, I wonder why not post this information online all at one time, then back it up with mailing. 27,000 didn’t get good news, far more than got good news, it was pretty hyped on here considering the odds. But maybe most aren’t on here and didn’t know it was coming? I think being oblivious is better than the torture of waiting for the mail. 9,000 acceptances come out later, not gonna look at when, don’t want to know! Surprise is better.

why do you say that texas?
