Hi! I am going to be applying to LMU Early Action this year. I probably will receive very little need-based aid and am therefore counting on merit scholarships. I was wondering what my chances are of getting a merit scholarship (and for how much) with my stats. Also if anyone has received merit aid from LMU and sees this, could you please post your stats and how much you got? Thank you!!
GPA: 3.83, unweighted
Class Rank: 54 out of 438 (top 12%)
APs: 8 total, 1 sophomore year, 3 junior year, 4 senior year
SAT: 2120 overall, 610 Math, 770 Reading, 740 Writing. (still waiting on October SAT results, trying to get Math up!)
SAT Subject Tests: (not sure if LMU takes these, but) 730 Literature, 720 US History
Awards: AP Scholar with Honors
Extracurriculars: Quite a few. 10 years in 4H, was president. School newspaper, school literary journal, student mentoring. I also have a job working at a preschool/elementary school.
Common App Essay: It’s really good. At least, that’s what my AP Lit teacher said and other people who read it. I consider myself a very good writer.
Letters of Rec: Also should be very good. One of the teachers knows me extremely well, I talked to her all the time outside of class throughout high school and had her freshmen and junior year. The other is a math teacher who I got help from outside of class all the time throughout junior year.
It’s a lot of info but I’m thorough! If someone could give input, it would be very much appreciated!
Hey anothermuggle! Actually, I was just about to post a similar thread to this! You and I have almost identical stats, and I am counting on Merit Based Scholarships as well. I was just accepted with Honors at Entrance to LMU, but I haven’t heard about any scholarships yet. Have you discovered anything yet? I would absolutely LOVE to go here - but not if I can’t graduate without debt ;(
Thanks!
@mwuycheck if you don’t mind my asking, how do you know you were accepted honors at entrance?
I hear we won’t find out about merit awards until the end of January…
Oh don’t worry about it! I received the letter of my acceptance today, with a certificate saying I was being accepted with honors at entrance. The application for the honors program will open this Spring, but this certificate is allowing me to pass that and hold a reserved spot!
Again, my stats were very similar to yours.
GPA: 3.86 UW/ 4.14 Weighted
Class Rank: n/a, but from a College Preparatory school
APs: 6 total (2 junior, 4 senior)
Honors: about 20 or so (beginning freshman year)
SAT: 2100
ACT: 32
I have lots of extracurriculars, but the ones I like to mention are: President of Key Club, Secretary of NHS, Board Member of the Youth Ambassador Association, and Co-Founder of a charity drive at my school
The last point of interest in my stats is that I have (or, WILL have) my Associates Degree when I graduate from high school.
Is late January the time when we will hear about the merit scholarships that they automatically consider us for? I’m nervous that I will miss scholarship deadlines!
Last year people heard at the end of January, but in years prior they heard like a week after acceptance. But going off last year, we’ll find out end of January.
Do you live near LA? I’m wondering when I’ll get my letter! I think honors at entrance is a great indicator of potential $$$!
Oh wonderful! Thank you for the information:) I actually live in AZ! I am shocked they got it hear this quickly, but I know plenty of people who are still waiting for theirs! Especially in this busy holiday season, mail is always either extremely prudent or rather delayed!
I am sure you’ll get it really soon!! And yes, I hope so. The estimated Cost of Attendance is so high in comparison to the average gift size! So I am definitely happy that I at least have an idea of how much scholarship money I will need to apply for!
