<p>How many merit scholarships does JHU award every year?</p>

<p>Not many–about 20 Hodson Trust Scholarships per year to Freshmen and 2-3 Westgate Scholarships (engineering only).</p>

<p>There is also the bloomberg deal where they will replace your loans with grants… ohh I wish I had that…</p>

<p>I think it’s a tool to entice kids with little financial need (high EFC) to come to JH… think really smart dudes, I don’t know their stats.</p>

<p>I think they also look at what you can contribute to the Hopkins community - they want people who have shown a passion for something through their courses, extracurriculars, etc</p>

<p>Undergraduates
Merit: 68 (average $20,273)
Athletic: 30 (average $30,091)</p>

<p>Freshmen
Merit: 14 (average $27,471)
Athletic: 3 (average $20,942)</p>

<p>And just to clear up confusion that may have been created by some of the posts here:</p>

<li><p>The Hodson Trust and Westgate are the only merit scholarships Hopkins awards. The Bloomberg Grant is a need-based award. </p></li>
<li><p>Awarding a merit scholarship has nothing to do with a student’s EFC or need – that information is not available when the scholarship committee makes their decision. Scholarships are used to entice the very best of our applicant pool (the best fits) to enroll … they are merit based and having nothing to do with need. Some past winners have no need whereas many others have partial to full need.</p></li>
