Merit Scholarships at Rice?

Hello-

I am a parent of an applicant to Rice. He has yet to be accepted (Rice/Baylor, RD applicant so maximum 8 days away from decision), but I'm trying to think ahead.

With an EFC that's too high and no FA from other colleges into which he's been accepted, S is basically left out of any FA, and matriculation into any institution is contingent upon a sizable merit scholarship since we cannot afford the 50k price tag evey year. I know several families are in a similar bind, and so I want to know:

Does Rice gives a sizable amount of merit scholarships?
If you're an ED accepted student, and you received a merit scholarship, would you mind posting the amount on this thread?

Simply put, I just want to be prepared and know if Rice is a realistic college for my son in terms of affordability. Thanks everyone. Best of luck in getting into Rice!

Rice has announced that about 30% of their freshman class this year will be offered some sort of merit scholarship. I'm not sure if there is a minimum amount attached to this claim, but it does seem like good news! Good luck to you and your son!

Did you apply for Financial Aid at Rice? Did they not give you any aid? If so, you can try to appeal by writing a letter to their FA committee. It's a long shot but sometimes it works.

I got a merit scholarship last year and it amounted to about $15k a year. I applied ED and didn't get the scholarship offer until 3 or 4 weeks AFTER the RD notification deadline... in fact it may have been in May already, I can't exactly remember.

Good luck, though... merit scholarships are pretty much a crapshot and I'm very lucky to have gotten one.

Rice tuition, room and board next year is $43,200. Your kid should be able to earn $3000 in the summer to contribute towards that, and enough money working on-campus 10-12 hours per week. (lots of jobs even if you don't have workstudy) during the school year to earn personal expenses and part of books. So, say $40,000 a year; still a lot of money, but less than $50,000! No use looking at the stats of kids who get merit scholarships; most of the kids accepted have very high stats. Better just to wait 8 more days and hope for the best. Good luck! :)

Thanks everyone...tumbletiger, that's GREAT NEWS!!!!!

Beef- He hasn't been accepted yet, but a 15k/yer merit aid is about what we need to send him to Rice...so that's comforting to hear as well. And while we did apply for Financial Aid at Rice, we don't qualify for a penny :(

Anxiousmom- You're right...I was just curious.
