Merit scholarships at Swat

I recall being told at DW that Swat only offers need-based fin. aid, and no merit $ otherwise almost everyone would get it...

I think I read somewhere that there are some Swat merit scholarships, however few there are.

Does anyone know?

Only for some incredibly limited geographic region. For some reason my memory says limited counties on the DEL-MAR-VA peninsula. I could be wrong, and that could apply to some equally bizarre scholarship at another school. LOL. Should be easy to google.

The only solely merit-based scholarship program at Swarthmore College is the Regional McCabe Scholarship. Each year, two Regional McCabe Scholars are selected from the Delmarva Peninsula and two Regional McCabe Scholars are selected from Chester County, Montgomery County, or Delaware County in Pennsylvania. These four Regional McCabe Scholars receive a minimum of full tuition for each of their four years at Swarthmore (but more if they demonstrate financial need).

The Evans Scholar selection committee seeks extraordinary students who have met Swarthmore's rigorous admission standards and whose achievements demonstrate integrity, intelligence, the potential to take advantage of the scholarship's offerings, and a commitment to give back to the community as involved citizens. Finalists are selected from admitted students and are invited for on-campus interviews in April. All admitted students are considered -- no special application or additional information is required.

Each Philip Evans Scholar receives a one-time computer purchase allowance of up to $1,500 and an annual opportunity grant to create a personalized series of learning experiences outside the classroom. These opportunities may include international travel, professional internships, independent research, and community service. Philip Evans Scholars also receive extensive mentoring, participate in group programs and on-campus and off-campus trips. In addition, for Evans Scholars who demonstrate financial need, our financial aid award will not include a loan component.

There is also a national McCabe Scholarship. Like the Evans Scholars, actual financial aid is need-based, but the need-based package is all scholarship with no loan or work-study component.

In reality, every Swarthmore student receives a merit discount. The most anyone pays to attend is about $41,000 per year. Swarthmore currently spends more than $68,000 per student (not including financial aid) in operating expenses. Endowment spending is currently $29,000 per student.

thanks for all the replies! It's nice to know that there ARE other ways to get fin aid, if demonstrated need isn't enough, and loans aren't all that appealing...
