Merit scholarships at UMTC

@ak200008 Did your son receive these scholarships recently? I am trying to determine if the time has past for these to be awarded for College of Design.

Son received the $10k national scholarship per his MyU account. How do you check to see if they were accepted into Honors?

Of note, looking the shopping sheet I see that the tuition estimate has gone up $4k in the past year. S17 had a tuition estimate of $26,500 and S18 has a tuition estimate of $30,500. Same national scholarship amout for each. Most likely priced us out of sending both boys to the U!

@jpc763 - honors will show up on Tracker before you receive the letter in the mail.

@JBStillFlying AFROTC Type 7 scholarship covers instate tuition, fees, and books, and UMTC gives these scholarship winners instate tuition. Had a hard to understand conversation with umtc financial aid office in which they said they put scholarships against the bill in the order the charges are listed. So if tuition is listed first, the $15k of Gold and national will go against that. Because rotc does not cover room and board I need to work with the school to get things paid for in the right order.

Either way, thanks for the confirmation that these scholarships stack…so my kiddo could theoretically get a full ride thru rotc and the scholarships received.

@whaaa2022 - next time you speak to FA, just ask them what the net COA will be. I can never understand how the minds at any FA office actually works, but I “get” the bottom line w/ no difficulty

Tuition & Fees
Year In-State Out-of-State
2017-18 $14,488 $26,674
2018-19 $xx,xxx $30,514 (projected for incoming freshman)
2019-20 $xx,xxx $32,192 (projected for returning student)
2020-21 $xx,xxx $33,962 (projected for returning student)
2021-22 $xx,xxx $35,831 (projected for returning student)

@whaaa2022 So if ROTC scholarships only covers in state tuition, your S still need the 15k UMN merit scholarship to cover the rest of tuition/fee for the first year. Will need more out of pocket $$ on tuition/fee for 2nd/3rd/4th years. Room/boards and misc will be another 15k+ not covered.

Though not full ride, still much better option than the rest of OOS kids.

@netopspin UMTC gives AFROTC type 7 scholarship cadets instate tuition rates even if they are OOS…so he is fully covered if he decides to go this route.

@mwmomtwins I think it was probably a week ago. Hadn’t checked the portal in a while. Nothing in mail.

My son just got letter in mail last Fri (3/2) on merit scholarships. He received two, one for 2k, another for 1,5k. He is a MN resident going into CSE.

Are there any chance for additional merit aid once you join?

I just got a letter in the mail today informing me that I received a $1000 one-time scholarship that is specific to CSOM, very excited! I am a WI resident.

@ak200008 I am wondering the same thing. Anyone know if there is a chance for additional merit aid after you accept your admission?

I have seen a couple instances where departmental scholarships were awarded after the admissions acceptance deadline. I gather there are even fewer of these than the university-wide merit awards, so I certainly wouldn’t count on one. I haven’t seen any reports that the university-wide scholarships were awarded after April, but it may still be possible. The admissions reps have been pretty straightforward with me on merit award info in the past, so it’s worth a call or email.

My son is currently a freshman out of state. He got the National Scholarship and then nothing else so @illinoisx3 is giving good advice. Don’t count on it.

I have to admit I am pretty sad about my D not recieving any merit aid. 3.92uw/5.01w, 32 ACT from College of Design. She is well above the 50th% for the college, and nothing about Honors either, and received significant scholarship money from Michigan State ($22K), Delaware($24K), NC State($15K), etc. all who have the Fashion Design program she wants. If I was to call the school to ask about possibilities, would I call the office of admission, the office of Finaid or the college of Design? Not even sure its worth it. Pretty discouraged, as this is her top choice and the admission reps lead us to believe some merit aid should happen with her stats. Any input appreciated.

Honors ACT range for CDes was 30 - 33 last year so she’s definitely within those boundaries. Merit for OOS seems to have been cut back this year for the National (and Gold for OOs) but her stats are very strong for CDes so she’s probably still “meritable”. One thing that seems very different from prior years is that merit is talking longer in general to hand out (not sure why).

I’d trust the AO if they are giving you those indications. Follow up should be with Admissions as they are the ones handing out the university-wide scholarships. Did she apply for College-specific awards? (not sure if those are like CLA where you have to fill out something).

Good luck! It’s very frustrating when you just want everything to be wrapped up; however, sometimes it doesn’t work that way and unless she needs to commit for housing purposes elsewhere, you still have about a month before Decision Day.

@mwmomtwins - A few questions… First are you in state or out of state? Second, when did she apply? Finally, if out of state are you saying she did not get the National Scholarship?

@mwmomtwins - you know to check the Tracker for notification of Honors, correct? That’s where it first shows up.

@jpc763 we are OOS, she applied 10/20 and received admittance 11/15 or so. Did not get any scholarships at all. A bit of financial aid, but through federal funds.

@JBStillFlying Yes, I have checked the Tracker. It still says nothing about honors, just admittance to College of Design in the paragraph. Not sure if there is somewhere else to look.

@mwmomtwins - I am very surprised that she did not get the National Scholarship. I would contact financial aid office to verify and let them know that you are considering elsewhere because of no merit.
