Merit Scholarships Available

I hope this isn't too blatant an ad but I know that several students on this forum are concerned about looming deadlines and affording boarding school. Please feel free to post information about other merit scholarships at other schools in this thread.

St. Andrew's-Sewanee School (SAS) will award up to four merit scholarships, the Caliborne Scholarships, to new ninth or tenth grade boarding students. The deadline for applying for admissions if you are applying for the Claiborne is February 29. These are non-need-based tuition assistance in recognition of academic performance, leadership ability, and commitment to community service. Two of the scholarships will provide half tuition and two will provide one-quarter tuition. This is completely independent of financial need but students who need financial aid in addition to the Claiborne may receive financial aid, too.

You can contact the Admissions Office at admissions@sasweb.org or (866) 513-8290 for application information. You can find more information about the school at St. Andrew's-Sewanee School

I know that Pennington School in NJ and Portsmouth Abbey in RI also have merit scholarships that are not related to financial need. They look for SSAT scores in the 90th percentile and other great credentials. But of course, the deadline is approaching for these scholarships

Pennington’s merit scholarships are for day students.

I think Peddie & Mercersburg have merit scholarships.

Peddie definitely does. St Pauls has a classics merit scholarship that is based upon performance on an exam.

I forgot about suffield.

Culver Academy has merit scholarships. So do McCallie School and Baylor School – both in Chattanooga.

Thanks, everybody. With tuitions continually rising, and a year coming up that looks like it might require some belt tightening, it’s important for families to know that even solidly middle class kids can receive merit aid and financial aid to attend boarding school.

How about A/E and Deerfield? (Like, Tier 1/TSAO schools.)

Fountain Valley School in Colorado offers merit scholarships, not based on financial need. Both boarding and day students are eligible, you must be an entering 9th or 10th grader. The scholarship if for half tuition – based on academics (I was told an SSAT of 85% was what they were looking for), character and extracurriculars.

Vaizard, I’m pretty sure Exeter doesn’t as well as other TSAO schools, but I could be wrong.

Peddie has a scholarship where you have to write an essay and turn it in…

Andover, Exeter and DA all say specifically on their web sites that they do not have merit scholarships.

Salisbury has “Merit Scholarship” based on “academic and leadership potential.” I’m getting ready to call about it.

Interestingly, when you look at Peterson’s a bunch of the schools say that merit scholarships are available, but I didn’t see it listed on many of the school web sites.

SPS made a visit to my area and I think they said that Merit scholarships are available.

Yes SPS has a classics scholarship and might have another one as well.

Suffields does have to do with leadership.
