Merit scholarships - do they exist?

Hey,

I wanna know wether merit scholarships in the following schools exists:

  • berkley, cornell, ucla, colombia, nyu

the thing is my family cannot afford paying for the school tuition and i do not qualify for financial aid.

thats a little bit about myself:
Israeli, 21.
GPA - i dont really know, i need to translate it from the israeli GPA, but my avarage is 97/100, which is somewhere near 3.9 i think.i majored in mathmathics, physics and french.
SAT - 2100
SAT Subject test - i havent take it yet.

a little bit more about myslef -

  • simulator instucture in the IAF - teaching pilots, navigators and flight controlers in 3 different simulators for the past 3 years. one of the projects i handled was founding a new simulator for a new plane. (2 years of army are obligatory. i did 3 so thats a year of volunteering)
  • volunteering at dog shelters for 2 years
  • volunteering at elderly facilities - mostly in commemerating holocaust survivals story.
  • volunteering in an non-profitable organization developing leadership among jewish and arabs all around israel with low social-economical status.
  • tutoring in math and physics throguh highschool
  • volunteering in an LGBT organization that helps gays around israel cope.
  • part of a LGBT girl-empowering program for a year and a half
  • in the future - volunteering in third world countries for half a year (going to do this in half a year)
  • part of a robotics team in junior high

Maybe there are other ways to fund college?

thanks!

BERKELEY … no merit really for int’ls or OOS students.

UCLA… the same.

Cornell and Columbia…ivies…they don’t give merit.

NYU…stingy with aid, even worse with int’ls.

You’re an int’l, so aid is very limited here. How much will your parents pay each year?

If you want or need merit scholarships, then apply to the schools that give them to int’ls with YOUR stats.

What is your M+CR score from a single sitting? That is often what merit is based on.

hey, I’m a us citizen so that helps with scholarship, but again - I’m not qualified for any financial aid.
my parents won’t be able to give me more than 10k a year. and even thats a bit more than they can afford.

If you like the urban schools, you should really check out Temple in Philadelphia. They’ll give you guaranteed merit for your stats. If your R&M score is >1420, you’d get a full tuition scholarship.

If u are a US citizen, then u are a DOMESTIC applicant, not an int’l one. This opens the door for financial aid eligibilty for you at many colleges.

10k/yr isn’t enough to cover room & board. If your parent can only afford 10k/year, then perhaps you might qualify for more FA than u think u do.

@GMTplus7 in israel paying for college isn’t something the parents are part of. meaning, my parents did not save money for me and were not considering this when they run they’re finances.
60k/y for them is not something they can’t easily give, even if they make more then 200k a year…
so my only options are to get scholarships.
my question is wether there are or aren’t scholarships out there for girls like me, in very good school like the one’s I’ve mentioned earlier…

Still, if you are OOS, you won’t qualify for California state aid. The big money comes from the schools and state aid.

The UCs are funded by California state taxpayers, so anyone who is not a resident, pays $55k per year since there are no scholarships for OOS students. Citizens and non-citizens alike.

As a US citizen, you qualify for a federal loan, on your own, of $5500 for freshman year. Because you are a US citizen, you can fill out the FAFSA for federal aid. That is not the same as aid from the state. You’ve said you probably don’t qualify for federal aid, so Pell is probably out.

After a loan of $5500 and $10k from your parents, how will your family pay the rest of that $40k for those California schools?

@“aunt bea”
they won’t. if i won’t get a full scholarship I’m just gonna stay and study in israel.

For the schools you mentioned, not looking too good.

The suggestion of Temple is interesting. Philadelphia is a big city. Would you broaden your search? You would be an interesting candidate for a lot of places. Your SAT score may be high enough for $ at some places. What’s the break down? Would you take it again? Or take the ACT?

@Lizardly
Hey, i would take the sat again if thats what gonna get me a full scholarship in good schools. what schools did you have in mind? whats the sat score ill need to have?

None of those schools either give scholarships, or are likely to give a full one with any SAT score.

You would need to look at schools like Alabama or Temple. Maybe not the schools you want though.

I think the mistake that students make, nowadays, is only looking at schools that have “prestige” associated with the name of the schools.

Consideration for paying for those schools is often an afterthought.

Scholarships, at less prestigious schools, which can be better than the “name-brand” schools, aren’t given a second look.

You need money to attend. The schools that have money to give to you aren’t name brand, that’s why they have money for you. Find a good school with decent merit money for your stats.

Should US citizen who served in foreign military file FAFSA as independent student?

^^ That is the question I was just going to post! I think it is worth investigating whether this is an independent student. It’s also a student getting very close to 24 years old anyway so it might be worth waiting.

There are LGBT scholarships, so check with those organizations. There are many schools that grant more merit aid than those you’ve listed. If you like the military, you might also want to apply to the academies.

@twoinanddone
why would my military background has anything to do with me being independent student? I’m under 24, isn’t that the rule?
can you list the name of schools which give such aid? I’m seriously clueless
whats the academics?

These are stickied at the top of this forum. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships.html#latest

Do you or could you qualify for any of them? The school list is different from the one you have. 1400 M and CR looks like the magic number, or 32 ACT.

If you had served in the US military, that service would make you an independent student for federal financial aid purposes. @kelsmom might know if foreign military service counts as well. Actually, the people in the EducationUSA office in Tel Aviv probably would know the answer. There are lots of US-Israel dual nationals like you, so surely they can help you with the whole process: https://educationusa.state.gov/centers/us-israel-educational-foundation

Your grades and test scores put you in the range for guaranteed merit scholarships at a number of places. Check through the list http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/

Maybe a U.S. military academy would be interested in you with your special skills.

For the schools on your list, admission is still an issue for you.
