This is just a curiosity question, nothing more. I have heard in past years that sometimes kids are offered merit scholarships to boarding schools--kids not applying for FA necessarily, and unsolicited. Is this common? Amounts have been about 1/4 tuition.

Some schools offer merit scholarships; others don’t. You can do a search on [Boarding School Review](http://www.boardingschoolreview.com) for schools offering merit scholarships. Amounts also vary dramatically from school to school.

Kent and Loomis Chaffee have merit awards.

Ridley College in Canada gives merit aid.

Thomas Jefferson in St. Louis and Episcopal High School in DC.

Peddie School has the Potter Merit Scholarships…

My son was offered a merit scholarship from Suffield (entirely unsolicited and unexpected but very flattering). It was for $5,000.

Our child was offered a $12,000 Merit Scholarship at Williston. i didn’t even know schools offered this sort of thing!

In a way, all FA is merit based, since students are only admitted with FA if they are deemed an asset to the school. If your child was offered aid that wasn’t recommended by the NAIS SSS then that is, indeed, a sign that your child is very much wanted at Williston. Congratulations.

Thanks wcmom1958 for the kind words. Our child is an athlete, but not in a sport in Williston’s athletic department, so we are shocked by the school’s offer. We are still in shock by the offer.

Seems athletic grants can sometimes be called merit based. There is definitely ‘athletic’ money around.
