Can someone help me find a good achitechture school for my son who has a 34 act 4.0 gpa and has alot of ap classes and a solid volunteer background. I'm looking for a full ride or something close. These are the colleges he is interested in
U of I Champaign
Rice
Notre Dame
Berkeley
Yale
I don't think any of those give much money?

I don’t think ANY of those schools give large merit scholarships…some don’t give any merit scholarships.

Rice does give some merit scholarships, but I think you’d need higher stats. Don’t think you’d get a “free ride” from Rice.

When you say “free ride”…do you mean tuition, room, board, books? If so, I don’t know of any schools with arch that will give you that. Is your son a likely NMF?

How much can you contribute each year?

Could you qualify for some need based aid? Could you afford to pay your “expected family contribution”?

What state are you in?

If you’re not in Calif, take off UCB.

If you’re not in Ill, take off UIUC.

OOS publics will expect you to pay full freight. There are some mid-tiers that would give you merit scholarships…like Auburn with Arch…but not a full ride.

Texas A&M would give you some money, but not a full ride unless a NMF

Check Tulane. They have a Dean’s Honors Scholarship that is for full tuition for the 5 years for arch students. Not sure about the room and board portion.

USC [ #25 USNWR] offers 200 FULL tuition merit scholarships and over 400 HALF tuition merit scholarships each year to incoming freshman regardless of the school they are applying to. BE SURE your son completes his application no later than the DEC 1 deadline in order to be considered for a scholarship. He needs to submit part 1 by Oct 15.

felice, first your son needs to decide what kind of degree he’s going for, the B.Arch or a BA/BS in architectural studies. The B.Arch allows you to practice architecture upon completion. With a BA/BS in architectural studies or any other discipline you’d need to get an M.Arch as well.

Yale and, I believe, Berkeley do not offer the B.Arch.

If your son accepts the combination of getting a BS/BA then continuing on for an M.Arch, then his choice of undergraduate schools will be wider and could include schools known for good merit aid. This route to architect is fairly common, but it takes longer and can be more expensive.

If he’s definitely focusing on the B.Arch, then you’d need to go through the list of B.Arch schools one by one to determine which offer merit. Also be aware of which require a portfolio and which do not. I’d think that some of the less selectives (but still highly regarded programs) would be a good place to start, like Auburn, WUSTL, Cincinnati plus your State U. Cooper Union is tuition free, but is incredibly competitive.
