merit scholarships for honors college students?

so i applied to UD's honors college, and i'm really hoping i'll get in with some merit scholarship. i can't attend delaware unless i get some type of scholarship. does anyone know how generous delaware is with scholarships for the students in their honors program (assuming i get in, lol)? as in, do they give it to most of the kids in the honors program or just the really really smart/amazing kids? [btw, i don't play an instrument... and i know delaware gives much of their scholarships to kids that play instruments :(]

My D has friends who were offered $9K/year (honors). Her friend who was accepted for music (through audition) was offered $7K/year. None of them ended up going to UD. (These students are all from the HS class of 2010.)

I’m sure zoosermom will be here to offer more information.

My son only got $3k and he is in the honors program (it’s not an honors college). If you have a very high SAT score you will do better than that.

Unlike the other honors programs where DD (UD '10) was accepted, there was (is?) no minimum amt given to students in honors. It seems that most of the money was reserved (Honors or not) for either the very top or someway special OOS students and to instate students (Commitment to Delawareans).

My D got $8000 per year in honors but she also got a bit of need-based money (which we don’t really have need, so it was very generous) that brought our cost down to below our state school. That was the goal for us to afford UD because there isn’t any other school where she could do the program she wanted. It turned out to be a great choice and she’s very happy, as are her friends who aren’t in the honors program.

I have a friend who receives 10,000 per year, 31 ACT and loads of AP’s.

My sister received a full ride plus spending money and didn’t end up going. Delaware is very generous with merit based scholarships.

^ Do you remember your sisters stats…SAT/ACT gpa…

She had a 2250 SAT with a perfect score in reading. Had a published play that was performed professionally. She was salutatorian of our tiny private high school. She was also instate with a double legacy.

my friend just got admitted as an in state student and was shocked that not a penny of scholarship is awarded. I do not understand the criteria used to award scholarship.

2250 SAT (single sitting)

4.0/4.0 unweighted GPA and weighted GPA 4.23/4.25 in a highly competitive and nationally ranked local high school.

6 APs completed by junior year and all honors classes if available

Numerous first, second and third place awards in state academic competitions

National Merit Semifinalist

Presidents of two service clubs

Very actively engaged in community services (hospital, clinics, and nursing home)

Ferguson Scholarship awards in reading and math in 10th grade

Prestige summer internship in a global company

Very good letters of recommendation by teachers (I was told)

^ Doesn’t the scholarship info get sent with the financial aid package?

The bluehen portal clearly states no scholarship. However, my friend has gotten full tuition award by other schools.

That seems mighty strange. Perhaps since she is a very early acceptee, the financial information just isn’t posted yet. I think she should hang on a little bit and keep checking back. Did she make the December 1 date for having her application submitted?

Note that someone on another thread said that merit decisions don’t come out till March for anyone.

Bm2011, I called the office and they specifically said that we don’t find out about merit aid until mid-march. I did find out I was admitted to honors though. In my acceptance letter it said scholarship notification will occur in mid-march. Tell your friend not be worried.

So is it truly too late to apply to Honors now?

Did you already apply to UD?

Are you instate?

No. I’m OOS and I applied to UD in January. If it is too late to get into the Honors Program, it’s no biggie really.

I think since you already applied then it’s too late. You could call the admissions office though.

Well I indicated that I want to be considered for Honors on my app, but I saw somewhere that Dec 1st was the deadline for Honors? Could you verify that for me?
